Kestrel Ballistics 5700 Elite

I had my first shooting session with my Kestrel Elite today and could not believe how well it worked. A friend brought a new rifle and scope and we zeroed them at 100 yards, and from there kept pushing out further and further up to the maximum range of 600 yards that the range had steel targets set up at. He was doing the shooting and I acted as the spotter and called the turret adjustments. Considering that the rifle and scope were new and the ammunition information from a load library and not past experience, it was quite remarkable to repeatably shift to the next further target and effortlessly ring steel. At 600 yards he was able to hit a 24” target consistently and a 12” target more than half the time. I had brought a printed ballistic table for the load just in case, and wound up disregarding it completely. It disagreed with the Kestrel solutions somewhat and wouldn’t have helped with the wind anyway. Going forward, I won’t bother with printed tables. One annoying limitation is that you cannot have both a phone and laser rangefinder connected at the same time, since they require the Kestrel Bluetooth radio to be indifferent operating modes. I also have a Bushnell Elite 1 Mile CONX rangefinder which can send distance and inclination angle information to the Kestrel, but then the Kestrel Link app on my iPhone can’t talk to the Kestrel. I find it preferable to lase the target and enter the distance and inclination information manually. Regarding the Bluetooth connectivity issues that people have reported, I have only experienced one instance. I had the iOS Kestrel Link app crash on me once when I tried sending a gun library to the Kestrel, and after that the app would not connect even after restarting it. I then toggled Bluetooth off and back on on the Kestrel, and that fixed the issue. I suspect restarting the Kestrel would have achieved the same result. Overall I am extremely pleased with the system. Watching the YouTube videos from Kestrel and Panhandle Precision has been very helpful in getting started. There are many features I haven’t even tried yet, but the unit is already a essential piece of equipment in my bag going forward. Update: I should add that I had tried shooting the 600 yard targets before by estimating holds and using paper ballistic tables. I don't recall every hitting them.

absolutely must purchase if you are a long distance shooter

New to long range shooting, was recommended this product by a friend. Read the manual and had no issues inputting data. Pairs with Bluetooth seamlessly to sig BDX and my accuracy shooting has increased dramatically! Very durable and best part is the orange color makes it so I don’t loose it in the woods!!

Wow, what a nice all in 1 package. I was getting wrong temps and data at the range to enter in my ballistic calculator. and wanted a better solution then what I previously been using . Other than ranging it does what I need. and there are a few tutorials online to get you going . Check out pan handle precision on you tube Sam explains in great detail on the setup. If you're like me and have been doping all your shots via manual firing solutions.... this little thing is a game changing piece of kit. I've had mine now for several years and it still functions perfectly.

Definately worth the purchase if shooting long range distances. Easy to setup and use and once all your accurate data is inserted, you have valuable information in your hands that is easily accesible. No need for phone apps with bad signal to retrieve or update your ballistic DOPE. The AB Learning content on YouTube also made it easy to understand all the features.

Kestrel 0857ALBLK Elite Weather Meter with Applied Ballistics & Bluetooth Link, Black I purchased a Kestrel Elite unit with Applied Ballistics and Bluetooth link to use during a Precision Rifle Level 2 training course at the top-knotch "Rob Furlong Marksmanship Academy", RFMA, in Hanna, Alberta. Each student shooter is required to bring a Kestrel for the course and the expert instructors there, Rob and Maury, are absolute masters of the Kestrel. During the RFMA course, I was taught how to use a Magnetospeed chronograph and the Kestrel to calibrate the muzzle velocity of the ammunition I brought along (140 gr Hornady ELD-M in 6.5 Creedmoor) to shoot from my rifle (a stock Tikka T3X CTR). I entered the average muzzle velocity into the Kestrel, captured fresh environmental data and then fine-tuned my riflescope turret settings for elevation and windage within a few shots fired on the 1000 Meter target. After plugging the new 1000M turret setting elevation into the Kestrel, I had custom Applied Ballistics information and turret settings for all ranges from100M to 1000M and beyond. Other shooters in the course who brought along their .338 Magnums, used data from their Kestrels to hit targets out to 2,200 Meters. After learning how to competently use my new Kestrel weather meter paired with the Kestrel smartphone app at Rob Furlong's course in Hanna, I have gained total confidence in my ability to accurately engage targets well beyond any range I had previously envisioned.

Great bit of kit. If you are into long distance shooting in all weathers, this is for you. It's not cheap, but if you need this more than an app, you'll know.
