war what is it good for
This is an edge of your seat thriller, Damon plays Chief warrant officer Roy Miller, tasked in finding WMDs in Iraq, where his superiors give him Intel and he then follows and executes said orders, but the thing is, every site he goes to there are no WMDs... so what is going on? His only ally is CIA guy Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson), who knows Middle Eastern Affairs better than anyone who always seems to be butting heads with Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear), and a reporter who wants the facts, the truth, (Amy Ryan), Pentagon weasel Clark Poundstone has a source code named Magellan, who is telling Poundstone of these alleged WMD sights, but Miller's Team is always turning up nothing. Then it seems Miller's task is to bring in an Iraqi General who may hold the key to what is going on before Poundstone does using a Special Ops Unit at his disposal. The Special Ops Unit is led by Jason Isaacs, a nice small/ cameo role (where the viewer recognizes him but can't quit put a finger on who he is, but definitely seen him in other movies--- played the baddie in The Patriot) His task is to silence Miller following orders from Poundstone. Poundstone's big picture is political, show the people abroad what they want to hear and see... Gaining a Foot hold and winning the war on Terror, where as it's not that easy for the soldiers on the ground actually doing the real work like Miller and his Team.Paul Greengrass gives us a movie that touches on this hot topic of the Iraqi War. Where baddies aren't just Insurgents, where good/bad is blurred, obviously I think Kinnear could be deemed the "bad guy"--- or likes to think he's just doing his job, going into a country thinking to himself it's for the good but ultimately invading a country for all the wrong reasons (sorry to bring in my own beliefs) That's what makes this movie so great. Greengrass portrays the Iraqis with a voice that ultimately once U.S Soldiers pull out it is up to them to forge a new country. There is a nice scene where Miller comes out of the streets into a posh Palace where reporters/ CIA/ top officials are staying, he's all sweaty, dirty, and he looks around and sees a BBQ, sees blond women in the pool, guys in polos lounging, drinking beer, as if Miller just stepped into the Twilight Zone, wanting answers why his sites are turning up empty. These people don't realize what is going on outside these walls.Damon plays Miller as the usual in control, steady, soldier, wanting the real answers, the facts, no matter how dirty, or right or wrong the answer may be, he just doesn't want to go around Baghdad blind where everything is in the Grey. He really does want to know is there a purpose on why we are here, where I remember a member of Miller's team states, "The facts don't matter we're here to do a job that's all"-- it was something to that affect and Miller replies, "It matters to me." sums up the whole movie right there. And with any Paul Greengrass movie, we have to have the final show down with shaky camera and all, but as always as tired as it may be, the chase sequence is thrilling, almost heart-stopping.... this is a well made thriller, no matter what your views are on the current situation, check this out. Ridley Scott's Body of Lies would be a nice companion piece to watch back to back.

A Profoundly Corrupt American Government and Military
You will hate the United States of America and the Americans after viewing this film. It pains me to say this about the American people since one of my daughters-in-law is American and she is a wonderful, thoughtful, kind, sensitive and caring young woman. In this film, Roy Miller, played beautifully by Matt Damon, is trying to discover the truth about WMDs and the reason why the Western powers, most notably America, invaded Iraq. He is literally given the run-around by the American government, diplomats, and military, even at points where the Americans sacrifice their own soldiers to prevent the truth from being made public. At one point, and Iraqi willing to help was literally thrown into a torture chamber, severely beaten by American thugs to inches of his life and had to be rescued by Roy as one of the few good Americans.Roy is prevented from exposing the lie to the public, that there were no weapons of mass destruction, that the USA invaded Iraq for other selfish means, thousands of Americans (not to mention the countless innocent Iraqis murdered by Americans) died for a war that was purposefully waged on a lie. Roy attempts to navigate the American system, a system that is so corrupt that it befuddles the viewer. The evidence of no WMDs is overwhelming. It is obvious that he is being prevented from the truth. Any evidence that he tries to bring before the Pentagon is denied. His journalist contact is Lawrie Dayne, played by Amy Ryan, who is outstanding in her role, and who, at first, thinks there may be WMDs. However, she comes to believe that there were none and that Roy is telling the truth. She is able to confirm his suspicions. As Roy attempts to expose the Iraqi general who told the US government years ago that WMDs were destroyed as far back as 1991, a high-ranking American official and special forces try to eliminate them, Roy as being expendable since he's not a willing participant in hiding the truth. The corruption in the military and government is beyond belief.I highly recommend this film. It's worth your time.

Matt Damon action movie
This is the sort of movie we expect from Matt Damon - hard-hitting, fast paced, intense. The supporting cast was not as good as Damon, but many are not as talented as he. Can't hold that against them. Kinnear did an okay job. Some of the others, according to a blurb at the beginning, were actual military men who had served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.A number of reviewers took umbridge at the depiction of the political back and forth between competing points of view. With no desire to cause trouble, I do think a few points bear examination. It is common knowledge now that there were no weapons of mass destruction, and that the accusations were lies to convince the American public of the need to invade Iraq. The first "governor" of Iraq was a career politician with, apparently, little or no experience with war. I don't know if he alone decided to disband the Iraqi military (probably not), but he announced it. Many did not want to impose another Bathist led military, but many others thought it unwise not to use the Iraqi Army to help regain order and control of the country. I have heard that the rejected military men formed the core of ISIS. I don't know it that's true but it makes sense, and they did show up on the scene with a considerable arsenal of weapons.Anyway, if you like Damon action movies, you'll probably enjoy this one.

Fizzles .
The combo of Damon (actor) and Greengrass (director) comes up with a good thriller/war film but not one of those stunning must watch again films in my view. Even the best of the 'Bourne' films was the first, '..... Identity' directed by Doug Liman not Greengrass, so I see this as a 'comfortable' collaboration between the two who obviously know how to deliver a good thriller spiced with action and with Greengrass' trade mark gritty photography and moving camerawork that gives an action film that certain feel. Nothing looks stage bound with this work, clever cinematography that brings alive the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq and certainly reminded me of the news footage of the time, 2003.Matt Damon is solid without being outstanding. He's not playing Jason Bourne so fair enough. But he holds everything together and Greengrass allows Damon the central role that he did in his 'Bourne' partnership with nobody else allowed much of a look in which is a shame as Brendan Gleeson could have run away with the film had his role been expanded. I could say the same for the bad guys played by Greg Kinnear and Jason Isaacs but they too were not allowed expansion of their characters ---- only my humble opinion but often a film benefits from a well rounded villain to counter the good guy with high moral values ---- Kinnear's corrupt warmonger and Isaacs' Special Forces killer were ideal to balance the plot but were fitfully used.110 minutes film duration, English subtitles for the hearing impaired, bonus features are very good. Not an anti-war film but certainly an anti-Iraqi War film. Weapons Of Mass Destruction (or the total absence of them) are at the centre of the plot. The film could so easily have been played as a political conspiracy but it veers into the action thriller genre. Certainly well worth a watch.

Superb action thriller
Before I lay the praise on this movie I wud like to get the negative task of criticising this movie out of the way first: during my initial viewing of this movie i found it was too dark to fully comprehend/decipher wat was going on during the last third or so. however, i will say that it didn't bother me at all during my second viewing. Now, one word Paul Greengrass. Absolute genius. This film features yet another terrific turn by matt damon and a director at the pinnacle of his career. sorry i can't really think of anything else to write, other than that i became so immersed in what was going on it kind of felt like a (thrilling) documentary to me and i dont know how to comment on a film this good without doing it a disservice. my only wish is that Damon n greengrass someday return to the bourne franchise...we live in hope.

typical Matt Damon brilliance
I make no secret of the fact that I am a huge Damon fan. He's just so right in this sort of roll.I'd seen this film once before but it was even better watching it again, an I got a lot more out of it the second time and understood more what was going on.Lots of tense moments, intreague and action but not too 'gung ho' as is sometimes the case with American Action Movies. As with the Bourne trilogy, this is another film that is worth watching again and again.

Prophetic film
Great movie. Doesn’t try to rewrite history. But when made, the story line foretold future events. Spooky.

Mr Damon does it again
This film deals with the whole "WMD" issue really well, and manages to entertain at the same time.As always Matt Damon is superb and has a really good support cast in this film. The plot is excellent and is filmed really sympathetically.A must have for all military film (or Matt Damon) fans.
