Composed in the 14th or 15th century Odin’s Raven Magic is an Icelandic poem in the ancient Edda tradition (Edda - a term that describes two Icelandic manuscripts of which together are the main sources of Norse mythology and Skáldic poetry) its anonymous author clearly had an intimate knowledge of the Edda literature and mythology which alludes to a number of pagan motifs which are now lost. The poem recounts a great banquet held by the gods in Valhalla while they were absorbed in their feasting, ominous signs appeared that could foretell the end of the worlds of the gods and men. The album 'Odin’s Raven Magic' is an orchestral collaboration between Sigur Rós, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, Steindór Andersen and Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir which premiered 18 years ago at the Barbican Centre in London and is now finally almost two decades later being released. The performance honours the poem, dramatic and beautiful, classical with a modern strike. A stone marimba was built especially for the performance by Páll Guðmundsson. Odin’s Raven Magic - the poem - had been relegated from mainstream ancient literature ever since 1867, when Norwegian scholar Sophus Bugge claimed it was a 17th century fabrication. This theory has since been toppled with literary and linguistic arguments and new research has concluded that Odin’s Raven Magic was indeed authentic and has finally being reintroduced to the Edda.

"New" item
This is how my "brand new" item arrived. No plastic wrapping, fingerprints all over the cover, and a pulled apart seam. Wrapped it in the box it shipped in because it was a Christmas gift and no time to return

A bit boring
I only recognized the band in the last song, but Jónsi sings in some tracks. The music is a bit boring. Doesn't sounds like Sigur Rós.

This is NOT Sig Ros as you know it.
I love Sigur Ros, and have seen them twice in concert as well as having every single album they have recorded--I love the band's original sound, and of course THE VOICE. But, this is a "collaboration" with the others folks mentioned, and they are featured prominently, while edging the Sigur Ros sound out almost completely. There really was only one decent song, and the rest quite pedestrian, at times sounding more like Gregorian chants on the one hand, or Celtic folk music on the other--but nothing close to the excitement and range you would have expected from this long awaited CD--my first disappointment from Sigur Ros since they arrived on the scene--don't waste your money on this one.

An interesting cul de sac, but not new sigur Ros
Think Heima.Or the parts of it with choirs and other voices. It has the feel very much of the live dvd which given the time that this was from (18 years ago) isn't surprising.Sigur Ros in any real sense is probably no more , but this is an interesting tangent on what was their most interesting period when they hadn't fallen out of love with Iceland or eachother
