Giordano Bruno - IMPORT

This is a brilliantly filmed account of the trial and condemnation of the great writer and cosmologist Giordano Bruno. The color and perfomances are exceptional. Bruno is shown to have an affair with a prostitute, Charlotte Rampling; one of the reasons for his trial and incarceration. Bruno was thought to be homosexual but no mention is made of that. There is a complexity shown in the in the trial in that many prelates who admire the many books and personality of the scientist try to defend him and advise he appologize for his openly blasphemous words and books; he refuses. Galileo only a few years later confessed his faults and was let off scot-free. The young Volonte' is exceptionally handsome and displays a phenomenal body in the torture scenes. His acting as always is great. I am very familiar with the statue of Bruno in the Campo dei Fiori in Rome on the spot where he was actually burnt at the stake. It houses fruit and flower stalls and several restaurants, one of which is one of the best in Rome. At a 90-degree angle to the restaurant is the French Embassy which houses one of Rafael Sanzio's greatest paintings. It requres a week's wait before being let in; I managed somehow to avoid the wait. Though the subtitles are only in Italian the pictures tell the story without their help. A friend who knows no Italian said as much. I'll be seeing this film over and over again not only to improve my Italian and because the story is so moving. I have ordered a couple of bios of Bruno which should arrive soon. Thank you, Amazon!

I had been trying for years to find a bio film ofGiordano Bruno and I found it with this film thatwas filmed in Italy in 1973! I was so happy untilI actually put it into my new PAL/NTSC ALLREGION DVD PLAYER which I received a coupleof weeks earlier (both from Amazon). I was sodisappointed to discover that this film is recordedIn Italian, which is where It was filmed - yet thereare NO SUBTITLES IN ENGLISH! I realized this movie was produced in 1973 - way before theyAutomatically provided subtitles for foreign-madefilms! But, I’m still happy that I have it. Maybesomeday they will add subtitles! (Or I will learnItalian again!)

The film dates from 1973 and Montalvo is the same director of Sacco and Vanzetti.

Splendida ricreazione della Venezia riascimentale ( fine 1500); eccellente cast; ottima visione con vividi colori e audio perfetto. Gian Maria Volonte' impersona Giordano Bruno con unica maestria, lo sguardo sereno rispecchia le sue convinzioni senza tentennamenti. Un film di denuncia di quanti hanno mandato al rogo coraggiose creature che volevano mostrarci alternative a quanto veniva inculcato senza dare chiare spiegazioni. Film da includere in tutte le biblioteche scolastiche e da trasmettere spesso in TV. Oggi ci sono tanti scrittori, giornalisti, studiosi, ricercatori, traduttori che vogliono "aprirci gli occhi", tra i quali si colloca bellamente il nostro Giordano Bruno con le sue opere.

Ein empfehlenswerter Film über ein zu Unrecht unbekannten Menschen, welcher zu seiner Zeit weit in seinen Gedanken vorraus war. Sein Wirken umfasste fast alle zu jener Zeit bekannten Wissensgebiete, auch wenn es einige heutzutage in dieser Form nicht mehr gibt. (z. B.Magie, Gedächtniskunst) Diese finden sich heute oft in anderen Wissensgebieten (Psychiologie, Physik, Medizin e.t.c.) Solche Multi-Gelehrten waren auch Leonardo da Vinci, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Isaac Newton, nur um einige zu nennen. Derartige Personen zeichnen sich durch einen hohen IQ aus. Sie sehen nicht nur die Zusammenhänge der Dinge und Prozesse, sondern auch die negativen Erscheinungen in menschlichen Gesellschaften und kritisieren sie. Auch Giordano Bruno kritisierte und polemisierte die unzulänglichen Zustände seiner Zeit (zu Recht!),aber dies war nur ein kleiner Wirkungsabschnitt in seinem Leben. Das Hauptaugenmerk lag auf naturphilosophischen Wirken über das Universum (nahm zum Teil schon etwas von A. Einstein vorraus) und über das Minimum (ähnelte etwas von M. Planck) über viele andere Naturerscheinungen. Aber eine extrem machthungrige religiöse Einrichtung, genannt kath. Kirche, welche "Nächstenliebe", "Vergebung", "Barmherzigkeit" u.s.w. predigte, sich als"heilig" und "gottgegeben" darstellte, ließ diesen überaus begabten, wahrheits- und gerechtigkeitsliebenden Mann nicht nur einkerkern (fast 8 Jahre!), sondern auch schwer foltern. Aber damit nicht genug, am 17.02. 1600 wurde er auf Geheiß der Inquistion (Kirchengericht) und des Papstes Clemens des Vlll., genannt der "Gütige", auf dem "Campo de fiori" in Rom öffentlich verbrannt bei lebendigem Leibe. 50 ,oft hochrangige, kirchliche Würdenträger wohnten dieser "Veranstaltung" auf einem extra dafür gebauten Balkon bei. Auch seine Werke sollten komplett vernichtet werden und standen bis 1965 (!) auf dem "Index der verbotenen Bücher". Bücher, welche in ihre Hände gerieten, wurden zerstört. Nur weil der "Index" 1965 abgeschafft wurde, wurden sie frei zugänglich. Man sieht, es wurde angemaßt zu bestimmen, was zukünftige Generationen wissen durften und was nicht. Dieser Film zeigt deutlich, zu welchen Un- und Gräueltaten religiös und ideologisch radikalisierte Menschen fähig sein können! Diese Gefahr ist auch heute im 21. Jahrhundert alles andere als gebannt. (IS, nationalsozialistisches Gedanken"gut", Diktatoren). Dieser Mensch war selbst sehr schlicht, verachtete Reichtum, materiellen Besitz und verteidigte seine Ideale bis zu seiner physischen Vernichtung, er war sozusagen eine menschliche "Dreadnought" ("Fürchte nichts"). Der grausame und vor allen sinnlose Mord an Giordano Bruno ist auch heute noch trotz einer lapidaren Entschultigung seitens der kath. Kirche (Im Jahre 2000: Papst Johannes Paul ll.) noch nicht gesühnt und steht wortwörtlich als "flammendes Menetekel" über den heutigen Angehörigen und Vertretern der kath. Kirche. Es wäre zu wünschen, dass jener Film auch baldestmöglich in Deutsch auf dem Markt erscheint, damit dieser Mann auch hier jenen Bekanntheitsgrad bekommt, der ihm mit Sicherheit zusteht.

Un film esemplare nel suo genere, perché ricostruisce i fatti con passione ed obiettività. Gli attori principali riescono a tenere sempre alto il filo dell'attenzione. Il lavoro sulle riprese è stilisticamente interessante, segno dell'arte di un vecchio cinema che la serialità odierna fatica a mantenerne il passo. Comunque il modo più adeguato di valutarlo è come film-inchiesta: una denuncia contro un potere come quello della religione medievale, storicamente colpevole in molti casi di soprusi, ma qui utilizzato come simbologia rispetto a qualsiasi ideologia voglia ergersi sull'individuo.
