Great cooktop if you don't want to cook
We purchased two of these units to install in a newly renovated kitchen. After installing them (meaning we had the countertop installers cut two 14"x14" holes for the plates, two smaller ones for the controls, pulled two electric circuits, and opened up holes in the cabinets for ventilation) we were very happy to try them for the first time. Then we learned, while destroying some very expensive fish fillets, that the units simply shut themselves off, seemingly at random.Further experimentation showed that this happens if you fry anything for more than about 5 minutes. What happens is the hot oil in the pan causes the cooking surface to heat up, and once that reaches approximately 380 degrees it just shuts down.Calling the very friendly people at Iwatani taught us that:1. There is no written specification (at least not one they'll provide us with) for how hot the surface can get.2. They think it's something like 410 degrees, but won't commit to it.3. The only thing they offered to do is for us to pull the units out and send them to their service center (at our expense), but they may not be defective at all, they're just not good for any kind of high temperature action. In conclusion, if you just want to boil water or do quick stir frying, maybe you can use this, otherwise look for another solution.
