Great concept for Step 11. Don’t need this book
Having come from a faith tradition that endorsers the concept of two-way communication and emphasis on listening to God rather than making him a wish-granting genie, I love the concept. However, I decided to throw the book away because one doesn’t need a book. In the Big Book of AA, it is recommended to be quick to seek the guidance of the religious in matters of communication with God.What simply works for me (without this book) is working my 12 steps everyday with a sponsor. In the morning I do my Step 3 and Step 7 prayers and listen for what God’s will for my day should be. Throughout my day I do my Step 10 spot check inventory and listen when disturbances come up. In the Evening I do my Step 11 gratitude prayer, Step 4 inventory of where I feel short, and then listen quietly for what God wants to show me or teach me. That’s it!

The real deal.
If you really want to know how to communicate with God and to know that the response you get is genuine, then read and follow the advice in this book. One of the major issues involved in prayer is that many pray but have no idea at all of how to receive. This is one of the few books to address and really answer this essential aspect of talking with God.It is not biased toward any religion, per se. It could be used profitably by people from any religious or no religious background.I have been reading and rereading it since I received it. Today I had a copy sent to a dear friend. This morning I rose early and did the recommended form of asking God for help. One key point which proved to be most helpful is that when you get the answers, which you will if you follow the directions, write them down exactly as received. Then apply the four filters given to make sure that what you have written down is genuinely from God or just a figment of your imagination. What I received was genuine. It was not something I would have predicted.Later, while driving to work I understood that I now have the opportunity to really have God run my life instead of my own ego, masquerading as my "mind", for so many years.A deep feeling of peace and serenity came over me. I no longer needed to think my way through life. I could simply place my burden upon the Lord and know that all is taken care of.I have no use for organized religion of any type. This book is the real deal if you really want God.

Great meditation book
Great book on AA history and a detailed description of the Oxford group's 4 steps. I use the 'how to listen to God' pamphlet for my morning quiet time. Just like James Houck, I started writing down all my thoughts that were cycling through my head, lots of stuff - people, sex, strange situations, absurdities, etc.I use the 4 standards to filter all thoughts that I write down. These thoughts that pass the 4 standard test I act on. I had long forgotten about some of these things. One example was a business I had robbed when I was a kid. I made restitution to the owners of the business, and I am now paying them back. Since then, the owners have thanked me for my honesty, and are working with me. This program has changed my life.
