Invaluable Resource for Morning Sickness and Hyperemesis
Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women by Miriam Erick is an invaluable resource for women with morning sickness and hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). I highly recommend this book, both as an HG survivor and a dietitian. I will use this book as a resource during my next pregnancy, as well as recommend it to all my future patients. It is very comprehensive, and covers important aspects such as possible causes, triggers, medications, alternative treatments, cravings, as well as helpful recipes. It also includes touching stories of other women having gone through severe morning sickness and HG.I had severe hyperemesis with my first pregnancy (IV’s, hospitalization, medications), and bought this book in preparation for my second pregnancy. I also had a consultation with Miriam, and she is an awesome resource for women with HG. It felt so good to talk to a medical professional that actually understands HG, and takes the condition seriously. During my HG pregnancy my doctors just did not take me seriously, or give me appropriate treatment, which left me feeling helpless and very hesitant to go through this again. It truly was a healing process for me to read the book, and talk to Miriam.HG is an awful debilitating condition. I would not even wish it on my worst enemy. For all you ladies out there, I think planning in advance is definitely key to get through HG. The more resources you have the better. Miriam and her book are great allies against the HG monster. I was unsure about pursuing a second pregnancy, but this has given me hope and strength to face what is to come.

The pregnant woman I bought it for was not impressed
The pregnant woman for whom I bought this book (in her second hyperemetic pregnancy) writes:"To be perfectly honest, when you have hyperemesis, a book about managing your morning sickness is of no use whatsoever. With hyperemesis, when you can't even keep water down, recipes won't really help you; they'll just make you sicker. You really have 2 options - take medications or take IV fluids (which they also put medications in)."----------My comment: your mileage may vary, and there is a difference between hyperemesis and "just" morning sickness...

not helpful for HG
I didn't personally find this book at all helpful with hyperemesis. I had HG with my first pregnancy and bought this book in preparation for a second go around. I can't imagine anything more useless than recipes and lists of foods to satisfy cravings when it's impossible to keep down even a sip of water. I was really hoping for food advice along the lines of "here is the bare minumum you have to eat and what supplements you have to take to keep from dying of malnutrition", but no luck. Furthermore, her section devoted to HG is just a list of the horrible things which can happen to you due to HG: abortion, acute kidney failure, death, esophageal rupture, etc. Thanks! I feel cheered up already. This is probably a great book for women with MORNING SICKNESS. Hyperemesis is not morning sickness, and the advice for one is not applicable to the other.

Waste of money
This book was useless to me during the 22 long weeks of horrible morning sickness. I'm not convinced that there is anything you can do that will make a difference. If you are suffering from severed m/s, I feel your pain! Hang in there- it will pass!

Important Acupuncture Points Included to Heal HG
Although many hyperemesis (HG) sufferers are frustrated by this book, it was vital to my healing from HG because it included specific acupuncture points to alleviate the symptoms I was experiencing. As I searched and searched for answers to how to heal from HG, even writing my thesis on it, I learned that I had to mix and match techniques and try techniques that may have failed in the past in order to finally find the healing I needed to overcome HG in my fifth pregnancy. I applaud Erick for dedicating her career to finding solutions to this debilitating illness, especially since she was one of the first researchers to look for answers outside the Western medical model.
