Colloquial Afrikaans: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series (Book Only))

I've studied several languages and I can say that - as a native English speaker - Afrikaans is the EASIEST language to learn. This book is a great introduction to Afrikaans - the easiest language for a native English (and Dutch) speaker and also the easiest and most logical and analytical Germanic language. After mastering a working knowledge of Afrikaans with this book, I was able to converse with South Africans and Dutch speakers. Prior to this, I only learned/studied Latin-based languages (Spanish and Portuguese). Now, I can read/understand Afrikaans and Dutch (and more German than I thought I could). I got this book on a whim (curious about other Germanic languages as a native English speaker focusing on Iberian languages) and have now fallen in love with the other languages in my native West-Germanic language family.

This was a terrific book for acquiring the basics of Afrikaans grammar, vocabulary, and syntax. As others have noted, without audio accompaniment or some prior exposure to Afrikaans or Dutch, it likely will be difficult for complete beginners to get the pronunciation right. That said, this is a very accessible, well-designed, practical, and comprehensive primer on Afrikaans, and one that I enjoyed using very much. I expect that I'll pick it up regularly for refresher help prior to future visits to South Africa.

A good book but I probably needed something more like a primer to start with. The chapter's subjects aren't in any particular word usage order which I found disturbing. I want to know why I need to say something a certain way. Other than that, the book will be good for brief conversational situations. Finding a toilet or restaurant, ordering from a menu and so forth. I do wish it had a cd with it so I could here the language pronounced.

Its got plenty of dialogues and very useful in real life conversations, too bad it is a book meant to use with audio, as it is unavailable, so you just have to imagine how Afrikaans sounds like. I am lucky enough of living in South Africa and have plenty of Afrikaans friends, but those who don't should better go to their website and buy the audio.

I appreciate that this book is accompanied by a website that has practice exercises in which I can practice pronunciation.

Colloquial Afrikaans is a well-written, concise presentation of a very difficult language. I enjoy doing the exercises.They seem well-thought-out. I would suggest, however, if I could, that there be a vocabulary list at the end of eachchapter.

Great book for beginners. The lessons are very knowledgeable especially with the audio course which can be downloaded.

Love this book, not many around but it is easy to read, follow and the audiobook helps with understanding phonetically how the words should sound, it’s a great companion learning tool! Would recommend to any beginner wanting to learn Afrikaans.

My son is very pleased with this. It’s not cheap, but he can highly recommend for usefulness in a niche market!

Discreto corso introduttivo sulla struttura della lingua, non sempre facile da seguire per le spiegazioni a volte troppo contorte e la traduzione di vocaboli da ricercare in dizionari a parte. E' comunque un buon inizio per chi vuole continuare ad approfondire lo studio di questa lingua interessante. Il precedente Teach Yourself Afrikaans è di uso più semplice.
