Great first Lionel set for a 6 year old!
No complaints. The train set is great. Everything works properly. Simple to get going. Love that it comes with a few extra couplers!

Excellent Item
For around $100, this is an excellent item for children, around the tree, outside on a deck or patio. The train runs perfectly forward/backward on the track and the functions work great (sound). We bought extra track and turnouts because I do custom modeling and plan to make this set much more stunning in a 1/18 scale layout. The train negotiates the turnouts perfectly by removing the screws.. The train itself opens and closes the turnouts and causes the direction to change in a looped formation. If you just want an excellent around the tree or outside train that any kid can operate - then this is the one!

Lionel New York Central Ready-to-Play Set on my READY TO PLAY GARDEN Layout.
The media could not be loaded. I must admit, when I purchased my first Lionel Ready to Play set ( The Hogwarts Express), I was a little dissapointed that it did not run on LGB 45mm track. These sets come with their own gauge track( slightly wider at 50mm). However, I decided to go with it and build my garden railway with READY TO PLAY track, getting extra track packs via amazon. Since then I have purchased the Thomas Tank Engine Ready to Play and this NEW YORK CENTRAL set. I have also purchased points ( switches) to add an extension later. So overall, I am more than impressed and hope Lionel adds more to this range. I would like to see some extra wagons and coaches sold separately, as these locos are quite powerful and can pull far more than what comes with the sets.

Best toy train for kids 3-6 yrs age
The thing about this train is it actually works. It’s large enough that it’s easy to get it back on the tracks without driving yourself crazy in aligning the tiny wheels. Overall the best train I’ve found on the market. Totally worth the price. My son has never been this happy in a while.

Great train for younger kids
My son wanted a train, but I didn't want to get him something that would just break after a few months. So we opted to spend a bit more for the Lionel. It isn't their famed metal trains, but it isn't cheap plastic either. He has dropped it a couple times and it doesn't show signs of abuse. The tracks are easy for him to put together and rearrange. We have now bought one for both boys, 10 and 8. I had the polar express version for years we put out at Christmas and they both loved helping set it up and operating it so I can see this working for kids 5 and older.

Frustrating, cheaply constructed, VERY LOUD and no volume control.
I'm typing this on Christmas Eve. My needs were simple - I just wanted a cool train to do laps around my tree on Christmas morning. As an adult, I had no problem spending $125 for one with the Lionel name because I figured "that means quality". I was wrong.First off - when the locomotive powers up, it beeps. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, endlessly. It does not stop until you turn on the controller. The beeping is hilariously loud. I was trying to sneak the train under my tree and literally dove on the engine to try to silence the beeping before it woke my kids up on the other side of the house. Google "Lionel locomotive beeping" and you'll see. What in the heck? Why on earth is this sound so loud?Secondly, there's no way to turn the engine sounds down on this model. I watched every Youtube video for other remote, tried the Lionel IOS app (which doesn't work at all), looked high and low for something in the owners manual - nope, nothing. Some remotes let you hold the sound button as a "shift" and use the knob to turn the volume down. Not this one - you're getting MAXIMUM VOLUME TRAIN NOISE all morning long.Even worse is the connection between the track and the cars. The wheels on the train cars are SUPER cheap and fiddly. It's a 5 minute ordeal just to get the 4 cars seated correctly so the train doesn't instantly derail. There is NO chance that my 6 year old will ever be able to get the cars back on the track if he bumps them, sneezes around them, or looks at them the wrong way. The track is just as bad - mine is on a brand new hardwood floor - perfectly level, no bumps, no seams, nothing and the cars just will not stay on the thing. Even at the slowest speed possible it's derail city almost every time.Compouding all of this is that for $125 they couldn't throw in some batteries. This is 3 cheap cars, some plastic track and a locomotive. They couldn't make this thing rechargable for $125? Or at least the remote? The remote that - by the way - you can't use the train without. There's no "on" mode for it to just let it ramble aroudn in circles for a few hours. Nope, the remote (separate batteries) must be on for it to work at all, otherwise it will stop and go into UNSTOPPABLE BLUETOOTH PAIRING BEEPING MODE. BEEP BEEP BEEP.I never in a millon years though I'd spend two hours setting up a kid's train set to go around my Christmas tree. Parents - DO NOT BUY THIS THING. One of the most frustrating purchases I've ever had on here. This thing is absolute rubbish.

Grandson Loved it!
Nice rig. we now have several of these train sets. This one has better sounds and the speed control has been improved since our earlier ones (two of the steam-type freight locomotives). My grandson is better able to control the start/stop control.

Remote didn't work
Put new batteries in and the remote wouldn't even turn on. Put another set of batteries in and hold the device just right and it turns on intermittently. When the train doesn't sync with the remote it makes an awful beeping sound (which would happen every few seconds). Sometimes the remote was on and connected but the train wouldn't actually move, just the noises would work.Try explaining to a 4 year old that the train that Santa set up around the tree doesn't actually work and we need to send it back to Santa's Workshop to be fixed.Wouldn't suggest buying, spent $170 on an unusable product.Track is nice and big and train cars are good quality. Was bigger than expected. Nice to look at.You will need 6 C Batteries for the train and 3 AAA batteries for the remote.
