The Popes: Every Question Answered

Historically inaccurate
I knew that the book would be bias in the way the patriarch of Rome (“pope”) was understood in the first millennium, that is expected. But what is not expected is them to give wrong information that can be easily researched. If they are wrong on something so simple as a Pope’s name’s meaning, it started to make me wonder how many more errors are in this book not even counting the errors of western Roman “Catholic” bias. For example, they state in the book regarding Pope Anacletus “The name Anacletus seems to have been most common among educated slaves and to have meant “blameless.””This is an obvious error, the Greek name “Ανάκλητος” means to be called back or upward, or called forth. Someone can break apart the word for themselves if they want to verify what I am saying by looking at the strong Greek #303 for ανά and strong Greek #2822 for κλητος.Ανα: “ as a preposition denotes upwards, up, as a prefix denotes up, again, back”κλητος: “ 2822 klētós – literally, "called" (derived from 2564/kaleō, "to call, summon").”It really is a let down to purchase a book, and find a very simple mistake right in the early parts of the book.

Almost everything you want to know
I saw this book in the bookstore at the Capitoline Museum in Rome and was mightily tempted. But it weighs a ton and I couldn't bring it home. So I ordered it on the spot and it was waiting for me when I got home. The title is slightly hyperbolic. The format is lush, with a lengthy introduction and two facing pages for each pope, arranged in chrono order. But there's no whiff of scandal or anything negative about any of them, even some of the more notorious ones. Plenty of photos and sidebars, though, but mostly pretty bland stuff that you could find anywhere. If you want some of the meaty information on the controversial or downright bad ones, read "The Bad Popes" by E.R. Chamberlin. For parochial school book reports, though, this is a good resource.

A papal accounting
A lot of material in this book. It gives a summary of all the popes in, what appears to be, an honost and true accounting. Learned some interesting aspects of the lives of these men (and one woman)

It’s a start to knowing how many and the names of the popes
I bought it used and it was in very good condition. My main purpose for purchasing it is to start my research into the history of the popes. As another reviewer pointed out it doesn’t provide an unbiased thorough study. I never expected it to. I just wanted the dates, names, of the popes. I’m not Catholic, but history has affected us all and should be learned. The quality of the book is well done. Colour photos, manageable size, and the pages are gloss which I like. I’m pleased with my purchase and find the used price of great value.
