In some reviewers' pics there are other designs. Does this make the Capt. America shield or does it make a variety of designs?

There are two designs. One design from the top plate is traditional waffle pattern. The other design is Captain America's Shield as an imprint pattern. They cannot be changed or removed.

Can you take the plates out for better cleaning???

I gave it to my grandson for his Birthday. As with most waffle makers I think you just let it cool down and wipe it. He loves it and it makes very good waffles.
