Easy upgrade to iPod sound
This is easily the cheapest line out cable I've found for the iPod. What it doesn't have (in case you were wondering) is cord length, signal shield, tension protection for when the cable bends where it meets the dock connector, and a premium cable material like cryogenic-silver. And a stand, I suppose. BUT! This cable works with everything from my iPad 2 and all the way back to my 30GB iPod video. Bypassing the built-in headphone jack and amplifier provides crisper and livelier sound. You've probably read other feature reviews by now, so I'll just offer my experience. My old iPod video's headphone jack hardly works anymore, so it was basically useless by the time I bought an iPod Touch 2nd Gen (16GB). I use a cassette adaptor in my car because it's old and I'm too poor to replace the radio to something with an aux-in jack. I read about the FiiO E5 headphone amp on Head-Fi, and when FiiO released this line-out cable I bought both products. Not only has my old iPod found new life (and extended battery life from taking the load off the internal amp), but the car speakers I was starting to fear had been blown-out sound like they have been replaced - and upgraded! Line-out straight to the cassette adapter sounds clean and I can more easily understand lyrics, for example, and adding the little FiiO amp separates the instruments and makes the music sound more "quick & lively." The amp also works around the poor amp in the car radio, which distorts bad at half volume and seems to lose volume over time - the FiiO amp let's me keep the car's radio at it's sweetest spot. When I use the line - out cable with my home Yamaha receiver and Audio Technica AD700 headphones... Whoo eey it's bliss! I say this product will help anyone noticeably improve their music and enjoyment, and should get it at this great price unless the intend to use it in a pocket most of the time... then they should step up to a more durable model. But seriously, try this!

Glad I bought it
I wasn't happy with the sound of my 4g ipod touch,it always sounded harsh no matter what headphones i used. i tried using it with my fiio e5 headphone amp which helped a bit but i still wasnt happy. this line out dock bypasses the internal amp of the ipod and did help produce a cleaner signal (at least to my ears), it definitely produced a louder signal because now the volume on the e5 is half of where i used to set it at. note that this has to be used with some kind of amp with a volume control because you wont be able to control the volume using the ipod when this is connected.

good functional line out dock
This is a good, inexpensive line out dock that does exactly what it should at a reasonable price. I noticed that most negative reviews are from people that don't understand its intended function. No - it does not allow volume control from the ipod but this is intended to by-pass the internal amplifier so you can use a better quality headphone amplifier. Yes - the cable is short but the intended use is with a portable headphone amplifier. So far to me it seems durable enough and works well. I would definitely buy it again.

Buying this Economy LOD Cable is a False Economy: Poor Design and Construction Mean It Won't Last
To anyone considering the L1 dock instead of the L3 in hopes of saving yourself some money, do yourself a favor and pay the extra seven bucks for the L3. It is better built and will last longer. I tried the L1 because I liked its smaller profile than the L3, which at double the cost of the L1 seemed a little spendy at the time. You get what you pay for. My L1 worked great for about two months of light in-home usage, then it began to be plagued by static, dropped connections, crackling, hum and feedback, etc. The actual dock connector part of the L1 really suffers in comparison to the L3: the L1 connection is held in my friction only, whereas the L3 actually latches and must be released by pressing latch release buttons located on its sides. After a brief period of very light, in=home usage, the outer cover of the L1 started to come off, exposing the internal circuitry. Unfortunately, my L1 failed shortly after my window for returning it had closed, so it now serves as a reminder that trying to save money by buying 'economy' versions of items is often a false economy. UPDATE: FiiO would not stand behind the product. After responding to an initial query and indicating they 'might' be able to help out if the vendor wouldn't accept a return, FiiO completely blew me off. Amazon, on the other hand, went above and beyond the call of duty, even though my purchase had been made through an Amazon affiliated vendor and not directly from Amazon itself. Amazon refunded the full purchase price, and sent me a prepaid label to return the faulty cable. While my opinion of FiiO has suffered, Amazon once again comes off as a class act. Kudos, Amazon, for excellent customer service.

Fails consistently
This is a very sleek design, with just the right length for going between my iphone and portable amplifier. The problem is that this cable reliably goes out about 2 weeks after the Amazon return policy ends. I've gone through 2 of these in about 3 months. It seems some of the wires inside the cable get worn out, because sound goes out in my left earphone. This is pretty disappointing, even for something I paid $4 for (and now the price has doubled. Time to find a new brand).

>2 months of good use then kaput.
I bought this to hook my FiiO E7 to my iPhone 3GS, and it worked! Beautifully in fact. It cleared up the sound by coming out of the line-out, than simply the same s***y 1/8 inch jack on the iPhone. I made this my new portable rig: iPhone>L1>E7>AKG K340. It sounded absolutely fantastic, wonderful little rig for taking to school. I used it everyday, took care of it, never crammed that little bundle of joy in my pocket or my backpack, I held it tight in my hands and never dropped it. But suddenly yesterday, the left channel cut out. I can't get it to come back. I wiggle the cable every which way, and yes I've used different interconnects, it's the L1. So it seems like the bending it was MEANT to be put under has ended up killing it. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and just go for the L9 now... I am quite dissapointed FiiO.

Good cable for use in the car with iPod Classic
I have long since given up on radio and CDs in the car and rely on my car stereo's auxillary jack and my battered 160gb iPod classic for my music needs. After several years of using mini-stereo plug cables form the iPod's headphone jack to the auxillary jack on the radio (and never quite being satisfied with the quality) I decided to try this line out dock cable form FiiO. This is a must have for anyone who uses an iPod in the car without a USB connection. This signal is much clearer than that from the headphone jack and there is no engine noise or hum transmited. Also, you do not constantly have to adjust your iPod's volume to compensate for the various recording levels of your music because it is transmitted at line level and you simply control it via your radio's volume knob. My iPod mount is a very short distance from my radio so this short cable is a perfect fit and I don't have lots excess cable that I need hide away but FiiO makes longer cable if you need it. Or you can buy mini stereo extension cords in whatever length you need to work with this. The only drawback is that this cable does not charge your iPod. I have not found this to be a problem because on a full charge an iPod can play music continuously all day and I very seldom have to drive more than a few hours at a time and can charge my ipod overnight if necessary. This little cable is a very cost-effective alternative to much more expensive options out there.

Functional,
My iPod's headphone jack went a bit flaky, so rather than pay to get it fixed or open it myself and risk massacring her aesthetics, I got this and a F/F adapter. This product works as intended, but my iPod's volume adjustment didn't affect the volume it was shooting out the bottom at all. Bear in mind the fact that this will give you 100% volume (Fantastic in many cases), but you'll also need a volume adjusting attachment if you plan to go straight from this to headphones. Other than this unexpected snag, works great for such an inexpensive little thing.
