The Fixer's Daughter: A Mystery Novel (Callie McFee Mysteries Book 1)

Plot Twists Abound with the Best New Female Lead
The Fixer’s Daughter is a great read by Hy Conrad, a mystery in which you feel like you can almost but not quite identify the murderer at different points. And you won’t, until Conrad is ready for you to. Callie McFee, an investigative reporter forced from her post in Dallas, returns home to Austin, where she can’t help but go where she shouldn’t, and push boundaries with her detective brother and politically-connected father, all to solve a crime that she shouldn’t be pursuing in the first place. Austin provides a great setting and plenty of political intrigue. Callie is just slightly damaged, in the most relatable manner—drinking just a little too much white wine at night, taking an Ambien just a little too often to get to sleep, willing to bend the truth just enough to move her instincts forward. Totally relatable. She’s a protagonist we need to see more of, so hopefully Conrad will keep writing Callie mysteries!

Good Read
It took me a few chapters to sink into this story, but once I'd settled in with a warm blanket wrapped around me, it was hard to stop reading. Tightly crafted, the story carries you along to a rip-roaring end. I do wish the proofreader had done a better job, however; there were missing words throughout. Otherwise, this was a pretty darn good book.Shades of Monk in the section where Callie describes how difficult it is for her to get some sleep. :) It made me smile.

Takes a little bit to get into it
I liked the book. I read a lot, so I can say it was good, it kept my interest. Not the best or the worst, but certainly readable.

A Nice Read
I’ve been familiar with the author’s work for a long time. I think this might be his best non-Monk work, at least in long book form. The book centers around the death of a college student. The “fixer” manages to cover up the arrest of the man caught with the body (and the shovel he was planning to bury her with), while his journalist daughter and police officer son work the murder case from different angles. There are some surprises along the way, and not everything is as it seems.Pick up a copy. You won’t regret it.

Why the cover up??
Hy Conrad has once again captured my attention on this latest mystery, “The Fixer’s Daughter.” From the moment I began reading the Prologue, I could not put the book down. I needed to find out what happened between the father and daughter, and just exactly what was the connection between the wealthy Keagan Blackburn and the young, raped and murdered girl. The interactions between the daughter, Callie, her famous father and her homicide detective brother hold your interest throughout the story. This is not a mystery you can put down until you know all the twists and turns!

Great Storyline
I love how the characters developed, especially “The Fixer”. I honestly saw this going in a different direction, so the ending was well worth the wait 🥰

One of the Best Books I've Read This Year
I loved this story about a journalist who becomes part of her own story. It was exciting, refreshing, and fun to read. I could not stop turning the pages. It also has a nice ethnic blend and features both good and flawed characters. If you like murder mysteries and suspense, I highly recommend this book.
