"Nod for me...Nod for me-baby"...
I am going to state my cons or pros of this movie, and then I am just going to s...t the f...up, and make you decide if the movie is good or not:CONS:I told myself that I will not bash these two actors, but after rethinking it, I could not help it but to write the following:1) James Dean (real name Bryan M. Sevilla) should stick to porn business, acting is not his attribute. Funny thing, he reminded me so much of Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich striker), that I had to remind myself that it is actually not him. Also, not to hate on him, but the guy dresses throughout the entire movie in black jeans, cowboy boots, and dark shirts,...in the movie that was shot in Californian heat.2) Ryan played by Nolan G. Funk looked so much like an older brother of Justin Bieber (incidentally both of them are Canadians) that I could not help thinking that maybe, just maybe, they were real brothers, or at least that they must be related. From what I observed in this film, not a very talented actor. He just has that gay look, that is quite popular these days in show-business.3) Everyone who watched this film seems to be only praising the acting of Lindsay Lohan, honestly I did not find her performance that worthy of mentioning...she showed tits for a total of 4 minutes, cried few times, and that's is about it...4) The number of times words LIED and LIAR are said by the actors in this film are countless. Never have I seen a movie were the word LIAR was used so many times that the it nearly lost its significance in the context of a given line or scene.PROS:1) The movies was written by none other then one of my favorite contemporary American trash literature writers-- Bret Easton Ellis, if you are still clueless who he is, it is the guy who brought you American Psycho and The Rules of Attraction. Speaking of which, The Canyons is very reminiscent of The Rules of Attraction. It has almost identical plot-line and it revolves around spoiled, shallow young Americans (contemporary American pop culture) who redefine the meaning of "shallowness" and "arrogance" and takes it to another level.2) I like the message or messages behind this film. There is at least 2 noticeable meanings behind The Canyons. I still have not figured out what the title stands for, or what it means. The only reasonable thing that comes to my mind are the canyons as gorges in a deep ravine between pairs of escarpments or cliffs found in American desert out in the west or in the desert of Australia. Geographical canyons can represent loneliness and most importantly desolation. As to the messages behind the movie the first one that is very obvious is the death of cinema in America (showed through the opening title scene and scenes throughout the movie that capture abounded, forgotten, decaying, laying in total ruin movie theaters all over the USA). The death of American movie industry is the number one message, I just do not really know how The Canyons with its plot tie into that very profound statement. Is the movie like The Canyons and the likes of it, that killed (and are killing) the American cinema or are independent American movies the future saviors of American silver screen? Interestingly, Christian (portrayed by the pornographic actor James Dean) who also happens to be the main male character of the movie, plays a producer of independent films. Is Christian (who is the most shallow and f...up character in this film) the savior of American film industry?3) What I also like about this movie, is that the characters feel real, some of their dialogue and lines might sound very amateurish and cheesy, but they are as real as they get.4) Music is what defines this film, it is very hip and underground like. It adds a lot of flavor to the film. Good choice by the producers. Actually, I will probably download the soundtrack, the music combination is similar in nature to the one from The Rules of Attraction (2002) and Drive (2011). Songs like "My other other Girl" by Brian Randazzo; "Love, French, Better" by Gold Zebra; "Coming Down" by the Dum Dum Girls; and Without the Night by Brendan Canning are just few of my favorites. By the way the cover-work for The Canyons looks a little like the one from My Blubbery Nights (2008).

This Movie. WOW! (Spoiler!)
James Deen, Lohan, and Funk really lit up the screen. In the beginning there was a bit of banter, creating a bit of awkwardness between Ryan and Christian, wished they could have focused on Tara's own uncomfortableness of having Ryan and Christian in the same table. Christian dropped subtle hints of his own sociopathic tendencies, and although the idea that he held power was there, i wish i could have seen him go on more power trips than just his power over Tara and the production of the movie, on a power trip on his own, or a sociopathic breakdown that would extend beyond just killing Cynthia and having Tara followed, but perhaps staring in the mirror and showing how Christian really believes he has power.James Deen, this is his first movie, and although you could sort of tell in the beginning when he makes small talk, he went on and did an excellent job of acting as the movie progressed, making it more intense. Lohan did an amazing Job. It amazed me how the power switched from Christian to Tara, and how Christian could feel power slipping away and having Tara get a taste of it. It was brilliant and genius. Although being a Deen fan, I was about to pass out when I saw the homoeroticness! It was simply amazing, left me gasping for air honestly. There is no doubt Deen really has talent and what it takes to be an actor. Lindsay really added a flame to this, really showed how she's grown up into a role such as Tara and owning it. Her acting skills were superb and no doubt she brought the movie alive. For a low budget film, it went beyond. I loved how Bret Easton Ellis, Braxton Pope, and Paul Schrader really captured how the movie business (really the whole entertainment business) no longer has any boundaries, and just how crazy it is, and the things people are willing to do in order to get what they want. I wish they could have shown detail in how Christian murders Cynthia but again it was on a short budget. All in all i REALLY enjoyed this movie a lot! It just shows how talented Ellis, Pope, Schrader, Deen, Lohan, and Funk really are. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A SEQUEL PLEASE, hopefully with a more elaborate budget, in which Tara and Christian run into each other again through show business, and Christian, though still wielding power, is sewing his own seeds for his own demise and losing control. I want to see him swallowed up by the entertainment world and thrown out into nothingness while still coercing Tara. I'd want to see how Ryan becomes the new Christian and just exactly what life has done to Tara, for giving up love for material things and being degraded. Perhaps also having Christian's deeds catch up to him. and how Ryan is transformed into a emotionless product of the Biz world, the resulting taking his own life, and having Tara in a mental ward.I definitely see that.I loved this movie. Really worth seeing!
