Great for sketching or underpainting -- smooth, dark, and velvety
I generally prefer Willow Charcoal or Vine Charcoal for sketching and for the beginning of any of my compositions before oil painting. It glides easily and smoothly over paper -- and only slightly less so over stretched canvas. This Willow Charcoal leaves an extremely dark and velvety stroke behind. It's easy to blend and erase as needed with much less dust and mess than the other charcoals. Not just for dark outlining, this Willow Charcoal does well with shading. It's very forgiving, too. If you've shaded an area too darkly, just give that area a swipe with a chamois or your finger to lighten it. To lighten more drastically, just use a Kneadable Rubber Eraser .If you prefer a charcoal stick with less dusty mess, you can try Compressed Charcoal Sticks which are made up of powdered charcoal and contain a binding agent. One benefit of them is that they can be sharpened for finer detail work.

Great
It seems like it's good quality charcoal. I haven't had problems with it breaking or anything. It is powdery and lifts easily when blended, which is expected of willow charcoal. The only problem I have is with the box it comes in since I would have preferred the set up box type that simply lifts up instead of having the little flaps at the ends.

Look no more. This is the best and most consistent charcoal.

Best Charcoal!
With most other brands, I've had to throw half of it away as it scratched the paper without leaving charcoal behind. Annoying during class. This brand is best and I have recommended it to others during my life drawing class.
