Powermate Vx Air Needle Scaler (024-0299CT)

I waited to write a review on this Air Needle Scaler because I wanted to use it and use it to make sure when I gave my review it would be based on true facts! This thing works great! I've used it for hours and hours removing rust (very thick rust) on the bottom of my Jeep. I used it on the front suspension and framework. It takes off the hard thick caked up rust right down to the base metal! I have absolutely no complains on how good this works, totally happy with it. The only thing I wish was different is the thickness of the handle, it's kind of narrow (thin) so it does stress out my hand pretty quickly. I am going to figure out some way of making it thicker and then it will be the bees knees!

You need to have lots of air to run this but boy does it chip of rust and old paint. I just cleaned my mower deck and it saved me lots of time and did an excellent job. I ran a wire brush over it when I finished and its ready to paint. Noise level is average or more, depending what your cleaning.

This little tool has been a great addition to my collection at home, not sure I would purchase for daily use but for small jobs its very difficult to beat! The build quality seems up to par, it doesn't have a ton of punch but for the price I wont complain, make sure you keep it well oiled as the dusty environments these work in gum them up very fast. It also uses a ton of air so be sure to have a large compressor to keep up for longer duration use

Works great, also works as an air hammer when paired with an air hammer quick detach attachment and chisel.

Works good for what i needed. Takes a lot of air. A pancake compressor doeant really keep up, but using for welding slag removal is okay.

I use this tool for chipping slag on hard to reach welds. For that it's perfect. I agree with the other reviews that it is loud. Not really that much louder than any other scalers I've used though. And it is a bit of an air hog but again I don't notice that much difference between this scaler and any other's I've used. They seem to always be air hogs. Another quirk, probably because it's cheap, is that it takes a generous amount of oil and takes it regularly. If I were going to use it for extended periods I'd stop every 15 minutes or so and give it some more oil. If I were using this to strip paint or rust (where I had to use it for extended periods) I would probably buy something more expensive and a bit more polished. Something with a needle choke, a bit smoother action, probably not a bare metal pistol grip. But that's just me. For my use, and for $30, this really can't be beat. I will update if it breaks down but unless that happens I'm pretty happy with it.

3 Month Update I have been using this to work on a rusty car. About a month ago I noticed the scaler begin to hesitate to start up. I fiddled with the air pressure and got it to be more reliable, but today it has stopped altogether and nothing I do seems to get it to work. When you pull the trigger, all you get is air coming out of the exhaust port. It worked pretty well while it did, and it is cheap enough, but 3 months usage is just not good enough. I did keep it oiled. I am going to look for another brand that may be more reliable. Do not buy this one unless you consider it a throw away tool after your first project. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I never heard of a needle scaler before, and I saw someone using one on a YouTube video. I live in a coastal area where rust is a problem due to sea breeze. But my main focus is the underside of a Toyota that spent 8 years in Pittsburgh. Yes, they use salt there, a lot of it. Anyway, When the package arrived, before opening it I realized that it is a lot heavier than I anticipated. Opening it up confirmed that yes indeed, it is pretty heavy, but not too much to use. Decided to test it out on a steel patio chair. It worked pretty good on the light rust that was in a few places. Knocked the rust off and sprayed it with rest reformer. Chair saved! I have a older craftsman 10 gallon compressor, and it seemed to work just fine with that. There is an adjustment on the bottom that allows you to vary the amount of air going through and thus the power. You are supposed to add oil after each use. Overall, pretty cool! Great price!

Things it could include: Air Tool Oil - since it says it needs to be oiled every use A fitting or two - since you'll need one to connect it to your air hose An allen wrench - since one is required to tighten the screws around the side before use What it does include: None of the above. Which is fairly crazy. Okay, maybe you might want to use a different fitting than what they include, so they left it out. But even the cheapest IKEA knock off includes an allen wrench. And a tiny tube of oil, so you can at least use it when you first receive it? Not that much to ask. Instead, you have something that can't be fully assembled or used, when you receive it. So, it's cheap alright. But you get what you pay for.

I use this tool mostly for quick preparation of steel wheels before getting them ready for paint job. It removes in no time all that rust and dirt in the wheels folds and crevices. I found that it works better and faster then regular roloc discs mounted on air grinders. I only need to use a sandpaper to finish and smooth out the surface before the first paint coating. This tool is a pleasure to use and is efficient for what it does. I use it with a 60 gallons air compressor. I don’t think that any air compressor smaller then 15 gallons could provide enough compressed air to power it. Figure approx. 7CFM at 90psi. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again if ever needed.

I purchased this product after reviewing several online videos about it. With great confidence I finally placed my order and received it in advance given the pandemic stuff we're going through I used it last weekend on my truck frame having the bed already removed. It WORKS exactly i how was told it would. The heavy scale i had just blasted off with ease even in the tightest crevices where i grinding wheel or wire wheel cant get to. Even on the smaller parts i removed i bench scaled those as well with excellent results. For the money? i cannot think of a better tool to do this job. Eye and Ear protection is a must!! The pistol grip permits longer work times with far less fatigue VS the straight thru handle style versions. Highly Recommend this!

After a maximum of one hour of use, the device has been down since yesterday. Despite careful oil supply, the vibration mechanism has stopped working, nothing more. Exceeds my worst concerns about poor quality. I'm excited... Better stay away from such goods!

Works as it should. Definitely doesn't hit as hard as the powerfist one I had from princess auto but it dose the trick for rust and weld slag.
