The rotating rod stopped rotating after single use! What might be the problem?

Check to make sure it’s on correctly. Take it off, make sure it’s clean underneath. Then reinstall the arm. If it’s still doesn’t work may have to return it. Also if you over fill it , it will strain the rotating arm and the motor.

Do you have to turn the timer on for it to heat up?

I wouldn't think so. My heating element died after about a dozen uses which seems pretty common if you use these to roast coffee beans (buy a warranty or figure out a better system would be my advice).
