Until its closure in 1969, the Waverley Route served the border towns and villages between Carlisle and Edinburgh. The industrial towns of Hawick and Galashiels contrasted sharply with the lonely beauty of Falahill, Shankend and Whitrope Summit, names that evoke memories of hard working steam locomotives as they pounded up steep gradients. From D49s in 1959, A1s, A3s, A4s, B1s and V2s in the early 1960s, to Claytons and Peaks after the end of steam, we trace the changes in motive power, including scenes on the last day of passenger workings. Leisurely trips on the branch lines to Kelso, Langholm and Selkirk, with studies of Galashiels, Hawick, St. Boswells, Shankend and Stow complement a superb final rail travelogue from Carlisle to Edinburgh featuring almost every station on the route. Nostalgia At It's Best.
What can I say about this DVD the Waverley Route. Superb. Great memories to look back on again and again. Compare this footage to the New Border Railway all be it Waverley Route reborn in part, it's amazing how much miles of track covered the borders that sadly disappeared following the line's unneccessary closure following Beechings Report by a Labour yes Labour Government in 1969.You will never get tired watching this DVD, and I recommend this to anyone interested in railways.I would also recommend Videoscene whom I purchased my order from, as their service is impeccable.

Until you can ride the Long Road again!!
This DVD of the Waverley Route, or the 'Long Road' as railway people refer to it as, is just superb in my view. For what must have been filmed using 8mm cine the quality might not be up to todays standard but the pure nostalgia of the filming is gripping. The camera operators have had a steady hand, very little juddering even with scenes shot from the trains. For me though the final part shot from the train, together with an inspired selection of music, really does send the goose bumps to the fore and will serve to keep fans of this breathtaking line yearning for its return which for the section between Edinburgh Waverley and Galashiels may only be 3 years away. While at Whithrop Summit the sterling efforts by members of the Waveeley Route Heritiage Association have already begun relaying track.See pictures at [...]
