Headline says it all no? I love my Agri-Fab 48" plug aerator; but I hate the spoons. Here's the deal. There are three grades of aerators: lowest-Spike mid-open/half spoon top-closed spoon. (I won't get into the commercial line of $2500 aerators....but, they DO use a closed spoon). Where am I going with this rant? To say, I bought the Agri-Fab 48" aerator knowing I would at some point modify the thing to adapt 7-1/2" closed spoons simply because the hitch/deck/frame were much sturdier than any competitor (and adapting the heavier spoons was feasible with some welding and drilling). These open spoons are soft metal, and dent easily. They don't hold a point past 2 aerations (I have 9 acres with horses so I have to aerate 6 times a year due to compaction etc). Remember, once you sharpen them 2 times, you've nipped off about 1/4" of material, so your plugs are shallower and less "plug" than they are just kind of a blob of dirt. A small blob at that. So, is paying $10 for this spoon worth it? nope. I wouldn't even pay the $3.00 per spoon direct from Agri-Fab. I wore mine out in about 2 years and then modified the unit to the closed spoons (cheaper price, WAY better performance). "Proven Part Aerator Core 1/2" closed spoon".
