Girls Go Power Pop!
S**S
Compilation of female power pop bands
This is a companion volume to the recently released: "Come On, Let's Go" power pop compilation noting that LP has only one female led group amongst those included. This LP shows what an oversight that was selections from the well known (Pretenders, Runaways, Bangles, Go-Gos) and the never-heard-ofs (MnMs, The "B" Girls, Letters to Cleo, anyone? I know - it is probably just my ignorance.) Nice to hear the Darling Buds and Primitives again (especially choosing a song that wasn't "Crash" from the latter.) And it's probably the first time I've listened to something by the Photos since 1982. "Come On, Let's Go" was very much focussed on the 70s and 80s whereas this, though dipping into the 70s is much more an 80s and 90s compilation. Like any compilation some songs are better than others but the standard is high (hence the 4 stars) and if you are a power pop fan it's well worth the purchase.

We Got The Beat
What better title could there be for this marvellous collection of tracks from girl bands - as well as some bands fronted by girls - that span the entire spectrum from the well known (Bangles, Pretenders), through cult favourites (Go Go's, Runaways, Holly & The Italians), to complete unknowns (Letters To Cleo, Eve's Plum). And every one is a winner! From pure pop to punk, from rock'n'roll to bubblegum, with a dash 60's R'n'B and soul sprinkled on top , and the occasional synth thrown in, this is marvellous stuff. Short, snappy, hitting hard and moving on. Never outstaying its welcome, even for a nano-second. Everything here will insinuate itself into your brain and fill your head with utterly addictive, hook-laden, radio friendly power pop.I need say nothing more. To write at length would over-complicate and suffocate the beautiful simplicity here. And that would spoilt it.Everyone here has got the beat. In spades!Go grab it!
