A Dark Faery-Tale
This is a truly dark version of faery tales, not based on a single tale. The original Grimm tales were written to amuse adults and are nefarious. There are many accounts complaining that the film has no plot, critics have made a point of this. For whatever reason, it looks as though the industry is blind as to the composition of the film. Unfortunately, the movie is not an A to B to C comfit zone. Perhaps due to the presumed subject matter, the expected script simply did not turn out to be a given trope. The film is an onion and must be peeled back to enjoy the treasure. OK, so what is the plot? (The singularity). At the heart of this film is an aging ancient queen who years ago cursed her kingdom striving to retrieve her youth and has set in motion the means to accomplish this. Terry Gilliam takes snippets of various Grimm tales set against Napoleon's armed intrusion into Germany, forcing the dread reality of war stepping unbeknownst into the murky, slippery realm of the fantastic. Stuck in this period, in the backwoods away from airy cosmopolitan society are the brothers Grimm. The brothers are of different minds, William is pragmatic using faery-tales as a backdrop to scare simple folks into paying to rid their village of witches, monsters, and curses. Jacob is immersed in the lore of the land and writes strange folktales related by the people including finding the truth in the mysteries he and his brother meet in the woods. Each tale involves the gathering of a child that the hideous queen needs to secure her youth and beauty. Several children have already been captured so the plot revolves around the remaining few. Terry Gilliam has created a delightful romp with the backdrop of military chicanery vying superstition denouncing politics against the legacy of magic experienced by the local folks and thus paints the causalities of war upon the causalities of age-old myths beautifully. Of course, this has an anti-hero, a riddle, a headstrong damsel in distress, a magick mirror, creatures of the forest, glass slippers, and evil (which always has an agenda) amounting to loads of action, pratfalls, and drawbacks until all the pieces of the puzzle cohest allowing for our reluctant heroes to save the day, thwart the military might and break the spell....and they lived happily ever after.I should mention that several top-notch recognizable actors (screen legends, amazing elsewhere) were originally planned to play pivotal roles in this film, I am truly glad they were not hired here as the parts are perfectly filled. The real fault with The Brothers Grimm is the continuity. It does not make sense that here and there scenes arequickly dropped upon the viewer especially where several deleted scenes can act to bridge the development. Thisseems to be a trait Gilliam has problems with in many of his productions. I wish Gilliam and his staff were able to take the time to interject the deleted scenes as necessary. This would fairly slow down the action making the film cohesive enough for a permissible audience experience. Makes no sense, I bought the 2020 Blu-ray/DVD/Digitalversion believing the deleted scenes were in fact placed as expected only to find these as a bonus feature? So, how is this 2020 version different from the 2005 or the 2013 version? Did the seller inadvertently dupe me by switching the 2020 version with a previous release? Is anyone in the know?
