Synology Disk Station 2-Bay (DS216)

Well, I have to say I'm blown away. I retired from IT several years ago, and haven't really kept track of stuff like I used to. I have to say this is a killer machine for the price!! I still dabble with small projects, and IP security cameras have been both a hobby and a little income for a couple years. I've been a fan of Blue Iris and cheap Chinese cameras like Microsevens and Foscams. On my latest project, a 6 camera system covering a commercial/residential complex, I needed something that wasn't a PC running Blue Iris. The load Blue Iris puts on a computer is pretty astounding all things being equal. Some research led me to this item, and I have to say I love it. Configuration is pretty easy to deal with. Installation was a snap. The applications available are worth far more than you pay for the device and drives. Everyone has a different phone or tablet, and the DS Cam app works flawlessly both on iOS and Android. My only heartburn is the cost of camera licenses, but given the time I've saved in getting things up and running, I'm way ahead of the game. I'm not only using it for the camera surveillance software, but also as a personal cloud and notes server, with tons more apps to explore. iCloud can kiss my behind!!

I'm a fan of Synology products and use this as a media server, surveillance station and file share server PC and MAC backups. I purchased this to replace an aging DS212 that whose performance was seriously suffering with the latest DSM software/firmware versions. The migration to the new one went without a hitch and the performance is good enough for us at 100 megs per second on writes and 65 or so on reads. That said, the performance should be better and doesn't match their benchmarks; and the reads should generally be faster than the writes, which is odd. I think Synology still has some software work to do and needs to fix the performance issues they introduced with the 5.x series of the DSM firmware, you can google and read all about it in their forums. They significantly changed something which caused many, many people on older generations of disk stations to drop from 60 - 70 meg/sec file transfers to 20 - 30, suspect this is what continues to drag down the speed on the new generation.

I purchased this item to replace an aging Synology DS210j. There was a delay in shipping but the unit arrived several days later in good shape. Setup was a little bit harder than the 210j since there was really no paperwork other than how to install the hard drives and to turn on the unit.I installed two WD Red drives. The tool less design made this an easy process that took only a couple of minutes to complete. I connected the unit to my LAN and set up the shares in the same manner as before. I then copied all of my files from the old DS210j to the DS216. The entire process of setting up the unit, copying data, mapping network drives on all of my computers, and setting up backup tasks took several hours.The DS216 has been running for about a week now and all is well. It is considerably faster than the 210j, but you would expect that.I purchased the unit from Amazon, however when my credit card was charged it said Amazon Marketplace. The invoice says Amazon. There was no packing slip, so I really don't know where the unit came from. It really doesn't matter since Amazon will stand behind it if need be.

I bought this to upgrade from DS209. Migration from the old to new couldn't be any easier!Here are the steps that I took:Please note that this is what I did to migrate from DS209 to DS216. Your milage will VARY! I got the steps from a youtube video and skipped some steps such as backing up all my files. I did risk loosing data but I took that chance because I didn't want to spend the whole weekend migrating.#1: I made the back-up of the system setting on DS209#2: downloaded the latest DSM for the DS216#3: Turned both systems off#4: took the first hard drive from DS209 and placed it in DS216 ( the order of the hard drive is important!!!)#5: took the second hard drive from DS209 and placed it in DS216#6: turned on DS216#7: log on to the DS216 manager and follow the wizard.#8: done!It took 30 mins to migrate! It retained all the files and settings as well! I am so impressed :)Oh, the system is fast. Much faster than the old DS209 but was expected.

Have been using Synology for my clients for years and they just keep getting better. Espically with the new Additions of the software that is in beta right now. This device is great for the home users that need storage and productivity, along with its easy connection to many offsite replication sites "Amazon Glacier" you can replicated data for fraction of the cost and its all automatic. Wonderful hardware and support and will continue to use for all my clients and my home. Always get WD Red NAS drives for them and never have an issue.

We have been using Synology for several years for client backups and have hundreds of these installed. We use them in combination with Western Digital Red drives. Easy setup and very reliable. There was 1 failure to a unit about 2-years ago that Synology easily remedied.

Fairly easy to install and works as expected. Timely delivery too.

Had this for about a month. It's our second Synology. Easy setup and much quicker than our old one (DS110j). I love that I can mirror two drives. Highly recommend Synology.

Ich habe mir diese NAS vor etwa 2 Monaten gekauft und sie ist einfach genial.Ich benutze sie seit ich sie habe für immer mehr aufgaben, aber eins nach dem anderen:Installation:Die Installation ist simpel. Ich habe momentan eine WD Red im einsatz, bald kommt eine 2te hinzu. Einrichten der DS216 ist sonst einfach und von jedem hinzubekommen, einfach den Schritten auf dem Bildschirm folgen.Streamen:Mein Haupteinsatzgebiet ist das Streamen. Ich habe meine Filmsammlung auf die Plate gezogen und die Video Station aktiviert. Sehr gut ist, dass es für iOS, Android und vor allem meinen Smart TV (Samsung) eine App gibt, mit der man das Material Streamen kann. Nur bei 4K material gab es bei 45 minuten 2 kurze aussetzer auf dem TV, wobei ich da vermute dass es eher an der Leistung des TV liegt.Geteilte Ordner:Viel nutze ich die DS auf zum ablegen von Dateien. Da gibt es nicht viel zu sagen. Läuft super. Ich nutze einen Mac, das Gerät wird im Netzwerk direkt erkannt und es kann los gehen ;) Ich hatte ein mal flott getestet und kam mit dem afp Protokoll auf etwa 110mb/s. Ich habe übrigens cat7 Kabel und einen unmanaged Gbit switsch zwischen rechner und DS - falls es wer wissen will.Kamera Überwachtung:Einfach genial. Ich habe mehere IP Kameras im Netzwerk und lasse die DS216 aufnehmen mit der Survilliance Station. Man kann entweder bei Bewegungserkennung eine Aufnahme starten oder einfach permanent aufnehmen. Auf wenn ich das Bild von mehreren Kameras gleichzeitig aufnehmen lasse, kann ich keine sonstigen Geschwindigkeitseinbußen feststellen.joa, so viel dazu. Alles in allem eine klare Kaufempfehlung :)

Je voulais un NAS depuis un petit bout de temps, et je me suis décidé pour celui-ci.Mon utilisation est principalement la sauvegarde de fichiers personnels.Le déballage est rapide, la mise en place l'est toute autant. Il n'y a pas de documentation dans la boite, seulement un schéma de montage et des instructions de démarrage. Le "DSM" (traduisez Disk Station Manager) est le système d'exploitation intégré au NAS. Ce dernier est plutôt intuitif, et la configuration se fait facilement. A noter que différents sites internet(notament celui de synology) vous aideront à décrypter les abréviations informatique très nombreuses. Je continue de découvrir les fonctionnalités de cet appareil petit à petit.. Le quickconnect est juste parfait pour se connecter de n'importe quel ordinateur ou smartphone.Ah et un dernier conseil, si vous souhaitez monter vos disques dur en RAID 1, mettez les 2 en même temps ! :p

Ho comprato questo articolo 2 anni fa e (per ora) ha funzionato alla perfezione.Ci tengo tutti i film e la musica ed uso spesso l'app DSAudio per ascoltare la musica in macchina.Anche l'app DSVideo mi permette di vedere i miei film da qualunque posto con Wi-Fi usando il Chromecast.Un po' superflue forse le applicazioni di Drive e Chat che emulano (anche se molto bene) Google Drive e Slack... in generale lo userei più come un contenitore multimediale che come server di comunicazione/drive.Nella modalità consumo minimo, consuma veramente pochissimo e rimane sempre acceso senza praticamente influire sulle bollette.È automaticamente visibile tramite smart tv samsung e permette di vedere i film dalla televisione in LAN senza praticamente nessuna configurazione.Anche se il modello non è più nuovissimo continuo a ricevere periodici aggiornamenti e bugfix sia di sistema sia per le varie applicazioni di default.Utilizzando Quickconnect posso accedere dall'ufficio e gestire i miei file, ascoltare la musica ecc senza problemi.

Ich war von Synology's NAS schon vorher begeistert. Die Möglichkeiten auch als Dateiserver sind nahezu unbegrenzt, es lässt sich leicht ohne große Fachkenntnisse einrichten und Datensicherung auf externe Festplatte ist auch kein Problem mittels des Skriptes autorun. Viel Zusatzsoftware steht zur Verfügung.Natürlich muss man entsprechende Festplatten dazu kaufen. Das NAS ist sehr leise, man kann es getrost auch ins Wohnzimmer stellen. Vermutlich kann Geräuschentwicklung durch bestimmte Festplatten entstehen. Man sollte im NAS nur auch für NAS taugliche Festplatten verwenden.

Unlike previous cheap NAS drives I've bought, this unit is easy to set up, and is quick. I'm getting backup data transfer rates of 5 - 6 Gb/minute, which is fantastic. I've set up a Timemachine partition, which works well, and the remote access also seems to be good. Overall, recommended.
