Alan TrachtenbergReading American Photographs: Images As History, Mathew Brady to Walker Evans

Fine but Narrow History of American Photography
Highly detailed but readable. More appropriate for a historian than a photographer. Unfortunately narrative ends with Walker Evan. Also, survey of relevant photographers is a bit thin. Nonetheless, remains an interesting read. Focus is the epistemological relationship between historical analysis and photography as an historical research tool.

A must
Trachtenberg's subtitle of Images as History , Mathew Brady to Walker Evans does no do the contents of book justice. This well-written and consrtucted book covers much more than from Mathew Brady to Walker Evasn, it also broaches photography subjects that were previously found in the realms of art history, architectual photographs, and of sociology, afroamerican representations. Ths book is a treasure for anyone interested in photography, America and its history.

An Academic That Makes Sense!
I bought this to help me with a research paper. Trachtenberg is an academic you can read.

A non-art historical view of some important work, the epilogue alone is worth buying the book. A
A well-presented analysis of American photographs, but often at a remove from the aesthetic impact of the images. I purchased the paperback and would not recommend it, as the quality of the images is not what should be used in any serious photographic text. The paper is not up to image reproduction. I did buy the MOMA Walker Evans reprint just to see the photographs in better quality.

Memorabile raccolta fotografica
testo storico di raccolta di immagini che hanno fatto la storia della fotografia americana. Peccato la qualità scadente della carta e della riproduzione delle immagini.
