Not A Backbone Reference But Buy If Affordable
This book needs to be seen in the context of its era.It is based on a similar book done in 1950 by Sears, a man who really has tried to write good introductory texts on a number of areas in physics.Considering that its main mission is to project the basics of thermodynamics, KT & ST for science & engineering undergraduates in the '50s & '60s, it is good enough.Of course, today it is common for all (except perhaps mechanical or process engineers) to look at this subject atomistically from the outset. This allows many of the laws and concepts to be understood more intuitively. It also allows a more unified approach to be taken by chemists/physicists/materials scientists when seeking to develop materials with specific properties : the property <> structure <> processing <> constitution links are seamless with an atomistic approach. So, while Sears & Salinger is a useful side-text to have for occasional reference or historical interest, it can no longer be the backbone of most scientists'/engineers' library on matters of thermodynamics -- or energetics, as one might better title this subject area today. But buy if affordable !

One of the classic books, in convenient print and price
The best book for getting the best picture of thermodynamics in elegant manner. Concise and complete but still an interesting read.

Thermodynamics Text
"Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, and Statistical Thermodynamics (3rd Edition)" is an excellent text to learn the fundamentals. This text should be the text any Physics Professor uses. Do not be fooled by other texts. This one is the best. My professor now is trying to create his own text for Thermo, and it is horrible. Publishers need to be more honest to their clients!

How this books compares to other
This book was recommended to me as an extra reading by the head of my research team. Being an aerospace engineer, I had read books by Cengel and Shapiro on Thermodynamics previously. This book is in very contrast to other such books, the entire treatment is in a form of rational arguments which step by step take you to each laws. There are no solved examples and this is not such a great book for an engineering course (or even for a first course in the subject). I enjoyed reading it quite well.As for product in itself, I had bought the paperback version, and for that price the quality of paper and book was apt.
