Silk Scarf Printing & Dyeing: Step-by-Step Techniques for 50 Silk Scarves

Lots of good projects for a range of skills and styles. As a total beginner I used this book for my first project, with clear cut directions and illustrations. I especially like the ideas for stamping with household objects. No matter which project you try I will caution that it takes some skill and patience.

If I were a printer or a tie-dyer, I would give this book 5 stars with exclamation marks. As a dyer who dips, sprinkles, and space dyes yarns and wants to dye scarves, I was disappointed. There are over 30 printing ideas. At the back of the book there are 18 tie-dyed scarves with instructions for how to tie the fabric for different effects. In addition, here was one gorgeous dip-dyed scarf that I definitely will make. There is a little information about which silk was chosen for a particular pattern, but not in a section by itself. There is a comparison of dyes and inks, but no information about which of the many different kinds of dye are best for silk. All of her examples are with reactive dye. There is a section on color.Who knows? This book may inspire me to try tie-dyeing again some day. Techniques are more interesting than they were were 60 yrs ago when I was a kid dyeing t-shirts. Her tie-dyed designs are lovely.

Excellent book. As a complete beginner, the dyeing section offered clear instructions and I achieved successful results from the start. The general information is clearly laid out and tells you enough without going into too much detail. Just reading the step by step detail looks like a lot of repetition but in fact this is really helpful when actually working through a project - you can just read on without having to refer back. I have no reason to suppose the printing section is any different though I haven't tried it yet. A great little book that also encourages free thinking and creativity. It is American but translates well to the UK market.
