great read for teachers
I purchased this book, thinking I'd read it in August, to refresh my attitude before another school year began--but I read it the last few weeks of this school year. I'm glad I did. This book is an easy read, but gives a lot of information to "chew on". I plan to re-read it in August. It has helped me to renew my commitment to teaching, after being close to burning out after 35 years. HIGHLY recommended reading!

Insightful
This is a wonderful source of information Marion with an east flowing writing style. This is a good book for any educator wanting to evaluate, learn, and sharpen his/her skills.

Best professional development book I've read in a long time
Best professional development book I've read in a long time. I'm recommending it to all colleagues and have already done so with administration. Very readable, practical, and steeped in best-practices.

Inspiring
I have had the privilege of both hearing Dr. Hopkins speak to a large group and receive training under her. She is inspiring! She makes me want to be a better teacher, but not just through one more teacher resource book with ready-made activity sheets. She wants educators to ponder their own ideas about teaching and their students' learning. She wants us to think, and help our students to think. She tells of her own journey, not always an easy one, and shares wonderful ideas for how to implement a new way of thinking into your classroom. Be inspired...read this book.

Great information for teachers, tutors, educational therapists
This is a terrific, easy to read, practical book that focuses on the process of teaching our students how to become deep thinkers and independent, reflective learners. Dr. Hopkins clearly explains why and how teachers need to move their students beyond memorization of facts to skills such as comparing, reasoning, generalizing, predicting, and questioning. Dr. Hopkins shares her own "up and down" journey as an educator through vignettes at the beginning of each chapter. The vignettes make the reader feel that they are having a personal conversation with the author and can learn from her struggles as well as her successes as an educator. No matter how long you've been teaching, this book will give you new ideas and make you think more critically about the goals you set for your students and yourself.Risa Graff, MA, BCETPresident of The Association of Educational Therapists

Not for teachers of young adults
This book disappointed me. I am looking for books that will help me with first-year college/university students. The focus in this book is on pre-teens, even though it does not say so in the promotional material. The book only had a couple theories that might be moderately useful with young adults. Also, since I see my students only once per week in 10-week quarters, none of the practical tips are useful. They are all designed for a teacher who interacts with students daily. The final reason I give this a two rather than a three star is that the tips are supported with Hopkins' opinion rather than backed by research or practice from dozens of teachers. The lack of critical analysis started to annoy me. I enjoy stories from the trenches, but also need proof they'll work in many situations for many teachers.

Inspirational Must read for all teachers!!
I have read this book cover to cover several times. This is an amazing book for teachers to understand that all children are not the same. Dr. Hopkins really conveyed many important ideas plaguing our society today. I have taken several of her classes and lectures. She is an inspired educator. This is not only easy to read and understand but easy to apply to your own teaching as well. Great book!
