So Good, Lots of Surprises
I really loved this book. As someone more interested in Buddhist practice than the more scholarly stuff, I hesitated, but this is such a great book for any Buddhist. More than anything is this book is about how people, from the Buddha's time until now, benefit from the teachings and practice of Buddhism in this very life, not just as means to enlightenment. It covers Theravada, East Asian Mahayana and Tibetan. I learned a lot more than I thought I would.I am a fan of this van Schaik's other works too - his History of Tibet is superb, as is Tibetan Zen.

It's ok
Good information but the writing style is very dry and text-book like. I just couldn't get through it.

Quintessential
For some reason Americans that practice Buddhism want to ignore the magical aspects of the religion. That is because religions that are associated with magic and the occult are frowned upon. Tibetan Buddhism is as esoteric as them all. Every religion in the world sprung from animism, shamanism, and ancestor worship. That’s not my opinion it’s a fact. You cannot erase history. So anyone who would like to learn about mysticism, across cultural boundaries, needs to read this book. Kudos to the author for being so bold as to tackle the subject.

A great read!
I learned so much reading this book, much of it surprising. This book expanded my understanding of and appreciation for Buddhism; the connections with magic allowed me to see even more entries into Buddhist practice. Highly recommended.
