American Weigh AMW-13 Postal / Kitchen Scale
I currently own four American Weigh Scales. The reason I like American Weigh is their documented 10 year warranty on all their scales, the excellent support as when you call them, someone answers, is knowledgeable about scales, and will help you. However, although this scale has a number of things to like, this particular one did not make the cut for *my needs*.Here is what there is to liked about this scale:- Stainless Steel platform, that is 6x6 inches. Roomy and nice, the stainless platform is easy to clean.- 13 lb capacity - for a kitchen scale, that is adequate.- Tare, hold features - both come in very handy, especially the hold.- The button to turn on/off the "auto off" feature. The auto off feature is very fast on this scale (60 sec?) and having the ability to override is nice.- The light comes on when you put more weight on it, or take weight off. The light coming on automatically is nice. Here is what I did not like about this scale:- The display is not easy to read unless you are at the exact right angle. I noticed this in another review, and it is true, as some angles are not ideal.- The numbers on the display could have been larger.- It turns off automatically TOO quickly. I like auto-off, but after more like 3-5 min and not the less than 60sec on this one... Sure, this one has a switch to override it, but that only makes one more thing to forget....- It is slow to adjust the weight when adding more weight to an already existing load. Having a couple second delay is common among many scales, but some scales are better and I prefer those. This one is a little slow for my liking.- The display kept "blinking" and cutting out. Could have been a lemon, but it was not a plus.I actually replaced this with two other AWS scales - the LB-3000 which is 6.6lb scale with 0.1g accuracy, and the AWS 55lb Postal scale with 0.2 oz accuracy for larger items and packages. I was hoping this AWS-13 would have become our kitchen scale, but the cons resulted in my wife choosing the LB-3000 for its faster readout, larger numbers, higher accuracy, etc.I still think this is a fine scale, and I would recommend it for those where it meets their needs and the cons that did not work for me are not an issue....Thanks for reading!

Scale still works very well after 7+ years.
This scale compares very well for features and function with much more expensive brands and boasts a 10-year warranty. It's pleasant and intuitive to operate with soft-touch rubber buttons and lighted display. Some of the display characters are a bit too small for easy legibility, but the back-light feature improves legibility to acceptable levels. I can't test accuracy, but at least it's consistent (gives same reading for a given item over and over) and gives plausible values. So far, I'm very pleased. Time will tell if it holds up to use in our kitchen. [UPDATE: After over 7 years of weekly kitchen use, the scale performs like new. First 9-volt alkaline battery lasted almost 4 years. Second battery still going after 3 1/2 years. ]One unfortunate detail is that the 9 volt battery enclosed with my scale was slightly too thick to fit properly in the battery compartment. Consequently, the battery cover (a separate piece) wouldn't slide and latch into place with the battery provided. The too-thick battery, labeled "Pakko heavy duty battery" made in the PRC (People's Republic of China), was probably an old-fashioned lead-acid battery, not the longer lasting alkaline type. When I substituted a new Duracell 9-volt alkaline battery, the fit was perfect and the battery cover slid neatly into place.Measured with a set of calipers, the difference in thickness of the two batteries was only 1 millimeter but that's enough to cause an annoying problem.Auto-shut-off feature can be disabled: Reviewers of other kitchen scales with auto-shut-off have complained that if a delay occurs during the process of adding a series of ingredients into a bowl resting on the scale, the scale turns itself off after being idle for, typically, 3 minutes. So if you have added only part of one ingredient, when you come back to add the rest (after rummaging in the fridge for more butter), the scale has reset itself and you won't know how much more butter to add. The AWS-13 is unusual in having a switch on the bottom that allows the auto-shut-off feature to be disabled so the scale stays on until you press the ON/OFF button (although the display back-light still turns off 10 to 15 seconds after the last button has been pushed or the weight changed on the scale's platform). I think we will be using the manual on/off feature, because otherwise the AWS-13 shuts off after being idle only about 1 minute, a much shorter interval than most scales.

Great value
Although I've just started using it, this seems to be an excellent little scale. It's compact, and yet can handle a package that's as heavy as I would ever send through the mail. It runs on a single 9-volt battery (provided) and the controls are simple and intuitive. My one criticism is that it seems to be extremely sensitive to vibrations. Even the furnace running throws the reading off, but only by a tiny fraction. For the price, it was an excellent buy.

Compact, Can Use AC adaptor, Very Accurate
I bought this scale a couple of months ago and I am still happy with it. It is very accurate and the size is convenient enough for my baking needs. Its maximum capacity is 13lbs/6000g. The tare feature is great. Since scale has a small surface, I just put a bowl on top of it, use the tare function and start weighing my ingredients. I no longer need my calculator to convert measurements. Dividing batter evenly for multi-layered cake, measuring egg whites by weight, and following British recipes that use weight and not cups have become so much easier. Another big plus is the AC adaptor option. It is not included but buying the adaptor saves me from having to buy batteries. Otherwise, you can just use the 9 volt battery it comes with.

If you stand next to it, you can't read (not view) the screen!
The scale seems great but has a major flaw which render it useless.First of all, unlike what most people state, I can remove the top plate from mine, simply pull it up. It's not attached to the body.Second, and this is the killer part: Viewing angle. You need to be at least 1 feet away from the screen to read it. I actually measured the distance as it didn't make sense. If you stand right next to it and expect to simply look down to read the screen, you're SOL! You'll have to either take a step back or bend backwards. The power adapter required for this scale is 6V. The one from the LB-501 works on it. There was no sticker stating this so this could be useful to someone. If you can live with this, then this scale seems really great. For me, it makes it completely useless!

Does what it needs to do
This scale is affordable, compact, and accurate. It's simple to operate and does what I need it to do. I'd recommend it to anyone who needs to weigh mail or parcels.
