My Hermitage: How the Hermitage Survived Tsars, Wars, and Revolutions to Become the Greatest Museum in the World

Excellent book! Many color photos of staircases, galleries, and art works.
Excellent book! The text describes the history of the Hermitage and the art acquisitions. All the photos are in color. There are far more photos of the various art works than of the rooms, gardens, and buildings that make up the Hermitage, which was why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 stars. There is a very useful map or building plan that shows the layout of the buildings comprising the Hermitage. I've been collecting books on 18th and 19th century palaces and villas for many years and I never cease to be amazed at the beautiful staircases, hallways, galleries, rooms, and gardens that were created in that era and this book shows the Russian contributions to the subject (although, as the book describes, many of the architects of the Hermitage were Italian).

Excellent overview and illustrations
I’ve been to the Hermitage. This book reflects the grandeur of the building as well as its contents. I am so pleased to have this book in my library.

A Nice Coffe Table Book, but a poor guide
If you want to view some great pictures, this is a good book. But it is useless as a guide for the visitor. There is no information on where in the vast museum complex a work of art may be found. And there is no subject index.

Lovely book written by the Hermitage director
Beautiful book by an incredibly interesting individual. This book is written by the Hermitage's director, who is one of the most highly respected leaders in Russia today.

Ist mehr erwartet als war
Bilder sind super, aber ein bisschen wenig. Als Direktor der Eremitage in Sankt Petersburg Mikhail Borisovich Dr. Piotrovsky hat Ahnung worüber er erzählt.

Good article still trying it out. Seems to toast unequally. Stay tuned.
