Pretend I'm Dead

This is a very good but odd novel with a unique protagonist, a young woman who works as a cleaning lady and trying to deal with a troubled past as a victim of abuse, depression, addiction, heartbreak and grief. The novel is written in first person so you are in this girl's head throughout which can be somewhat disturbing, but is also often funny and sarcastic. She definitely has a dry wit and is quite intelligent. I was really engrossed in this throughout. I only wish it hadn't ended so abruptly and gone a bit further because I really grew to care for this character.

A well written book with a compelling story line: A young woman cleans homes and wrestles with her inner demons as she snoops and speculates about her client's lives. Mona is a satisfyingly complex character with a difficult upbringing which includes abandonment and incest. The characters she comes across are diverse.....drug addicted, new agey, psychic, gay, cancer-ridden, etc. Believable settings and dialogue. Ending was abrupt however, as if the author never had even thought about how it might end.

I enjoyed this book.I buy a lot of ebooks and am a fan of literary fiction, and so once I get around to reading my purchases I have NO IDEA where they'll take me.This one was fun and I noticed the author continues the story (or maybe I wound up with book two) with another title. Anyway, that is a good thing because the ending to this one seemed a little abrupt after some tantalizing revelations.I enjoyed the writing style, the characterizations (especially of people not-like-me, it was interesting to get into Mona's head and at least a little bit understand the motivations of someone with her behaviors).I didn't enjoy so much some of the mildly crude facets of the book--they were believable and struck me as very human-if-a-little-bizarre--but I could have done without them.But on the other hand, if the main character is cleaning peoples' homes and exploring their very personal space, she will run across the things that most people want to keep hidden, so it definitely made sense in context. So let's call it a split between good literature and what I want rolling around in my head after the fact.

I would have given this a 3, but then I got to the end and lowered my rating. The main character is quirky, which I enjoy, but the plot was kind of all over the place.

Decided 55% into the book that it is a DNF. Weird, sad, I just don't understand a 24 year old woman of today.

This book is highly entertaining, even while it's breaking your heart. Mona is hilarious and unflinchingly frank about life. Despite the hurdles, it ends on an uplifting note that left me grinning with happiness for her.Of course, my favorite part was her move to Taos, and the extremely colorful characters she encounters in the New Mexico desert.

read this book. But beware, at the end, I saw some light (not the I saw dog/God kind).Not for the faint of heart or squeamish, as it hits on some touchy subjects, but if you can be objective and look at it strictly as a reader, it is a great read, in my opinion.

Extremely funny. Too short though. Wound gave loved to have read about monas further adventures.Hopefully there will be more from this author

A curious little read, clever and eccentric. However, I feel the author had a point to make which I somehow missed. Nevertheless, the pace was good and there were some truly hilarious moments.

Loved this book - the main character Mona has a brilliant dark humour, an interesting way of looking at life. All the characters felt so real, so fully formed. The best read I've had in a while.
