Love this pickaxe
Ice ordered 2 of these already now, because I recently left the one I had somewhere that was gone by the time I realized it. The first one I had for probably 3 or 4 years, put it through much abuse and used it on almost a daily basis. Naturally it dulls down on the pick tip and the chisel blade, but was still more then good enough to work well. I like the thinner chisel blade, to make more narrow an accurate trenches. Doesn't have a huge curve to it, which makes it easier to hit accurately in spots. An the pick side, which doesn't hand a lot of curve to it either. Is longer then on most other picks, which allows for deeper penetration. Thing l Having a thinner chisel blade makes this thing great for chopping through thick roots, an uprooting large bushes or shrubs and plants. It's also very well balanced for a 5Lb pick, the head is not heavy at all too the swing and handle. However it still has that nice extra 5Lb weight behind it. By far has been my favorite pick, an the new one come nice an sharp. Although you can easily take it to a grinding wheel etc, and re-sharpen the ends. If you do it right, you won't take it down too much. An can sharpen it several times over, before it starts to become too short.

Nice and sturdy
Nice weight to it. Comfortable handle. Seems up to the task for me, where I have very rocky soil and am working on my yard, it is a nice tool to help me dig and dig out rocks.

Incredible build quality on an essential digging tool
I dug a 45 foot 28 inch deep trench through very rocky and rooted soil using this tool as the primary digging/chopping/prying tool on the job. I encountered a significant amount of rocky soil and thick tree roots, and this tool did an incredible job helping to break everything up. The 5 lbs weight was appropriate, and in several instances I used it to smash rocks in my path to break them up and get them out of the trench easier than trying to free them whole. This tool is well made, and the grip is perfect. This tool was the MVP of my yard drainage project.

Handle was dinged up in shipping due to inferior packaging.
The pickaxe itself is a solid 4 stars, pushing 4.5. The shipping damaged the item because they put a stamp on the handle and basically ship it unboxed. Yes, it would cost a few more bucks to package it properly for shipment. But it would arrive undamaged. I don't know if the UPS guys dug some holes with it before it got to my house, but it is used on arrival based on the condition of the handle. I blame the non-existent packaging. That said the pick axe is solid. The synthetic handle should last many years. The quality of the pick head is above average. Overall, not disappointed with the item. 5 Stars would require better shipping and packaging. We should never accept sub par results just because we ordered it online.

Would buy again.
It’s a little heavier than I thought it was going to be, but it definitely does the job. Really great for breaking up hard soil or soil with a bunch of rocks in it. I’ve only had the chance to use it once, but it definitely did the job. Great for plating trees or turning dirt. It’s in the large size for someone who is 5’10” good size.

Makes quick work of clay and roots
Much better for our compacted clay soil than a shovel. Cuts right through tree roots. I've used it to cut out some impressively large stumps without having to destroy a saw blade. Good ergonomic grip that works well with gloves. Surprisingly easy to handle. Extremely solid construction stands up well to abuse. Great value - they sent me a two pack on accident but even at $50 it is a great deal. Wear eye protection.

Comes assembled, solid, well made
I use it to dig up areas of hard dirt or fix a gravel pot hole. The sharp end is perfect for biting into the dirt or gravel and the flat end is great for going through any tough roots. This pick comes assembled in one piece. The five pound head is a perfect weight for use. The handle doesn't transmit many vibrations and is solid. A good choice.

I got this to break up the ice on our gravel driveway. We have a steep driveway and needed some way to break up the ice that formed because plowing it wasn't enough. This works like a charm and gives you a good workout too! Even though it does feel relatively light and comfortable in the hands, it takes a lot of energy to chop repeatedly.

Outil parfait! Même si je ne suis pas forte physiquement, cet outil est si bien balancé que j'ai pu l'utiliser sans aucun problème. C'est un achat excellent!!!!

I have been using this pick axe to dig holes for landscaping plants. I live on the side of a mountain and have very rocky ground. So rocky that a shovel is almost useless. The Hooyman pick axe is very strong; I have used it to pry on large rocks in the tree-planting holes. It has a nice balance and good vibration abosorption. It is as pleasant to use as a pick axe can be :) It is not inexpensive but it is a tool that will definitely last. The price is very competetive with other axes of similar quality.

I used to spend hours breaking ice on my driveway with an ice chopper—tiring and not very effective. Then my neighbor suggested a pick mattock, and wow, what a game changer! This Pick Mattock with Heavy Duty Forged Construction, Convex Grind, and Ergonomic No-Slip Handle works like a charm. It breaks through thick ice effortlessly and saves me so much time and energy. The grip is solid and comfortable even with gloves on. Only downside: it's a bit heavy, so not ideal for my wife to use. Still, it’s a powerful, reliable tool. I give it 4 stars for performance and build.
