WW 2 1/2
I enjoyed this. Of course it leads into another book so this really has no ending. It was all over the place but that’s ok I didn’t mind. There were a lot of characters until the main ones came into focus. What I didn’t like is a lot of these characters were not fleshed out or well written. As in what do they look like? What is their powers? Give me something. A brief description or synopsis would have helped. There are political overtones in this. Going back to before WWII through WWII up until the present. Not the kind of political overtones of todays world where a story is written around an agenda. More or less historical political overtones. The book starts out slow and the main characters slowly come into focus throughout the story. Echo is the formal metahuman organization in America and the rest of the free world. I say free world because there are some Russian heroes that haven’t let go of the old world yet. The good old CCCP.The main antagonists are Nazis. Yeah old but these are not Hitler’s Nazis. I won’t say anymore. There are some villains as well as heroes who are the protagonists. The story jumps around. John has fire hands. Belladonna can read minds. Vic is magical. Mercurye is a speedster. There is even an Angel. Quite a few characters. They were all interesting except for Red Gjinni. He kind of got on my nerves.I recommend it. I will purchase the next book and see where it goes.

Finally in kindle format
I have always been a big fan of Mercedes Lackey and her books. I love her writting, I stumbled on this story many years ago as a pod-cast. I just totally can't get into pod-cast, however I made an exception for this one and loved it. Now it is finally in Kindle format and I am excited to read it as well as the sequel. I have already read the three novellas that were released in Kindle format however I think there is an additional novella missing. Once again the world is remade in these books, taking the present day as the starting point and then through the use of story telling reminding us how this version of present day happened. Not to mention the wonderfully diverse characters and stories that are being told. Additionally, you quickly feel like you are headed toward an epiphany of the universe.

Nice Foundation for a Series
As a 'non podcast' person (where it evidently was started?), I was a little hesitant to start reading the series, except for my admiration of Mercedes Lackey and the others as authors. I was happily surprised! While the book uses a lot of ground, by necessity, to build background, it was a fun and gripping read. It was like reading about comic book heroes set it a more realistic setting, with the strengths and weaknesses of characters being revealed. And if you like super heroes as well as 'urban fiction', you will enjoy this. Because of the background that needed to be filled, there were some slower areas, hence the 4 star rating instead of 5 stars. But I am looking forward to reading more of this! When is the next scheduled publishing?

Disappointing, not up to Lackey's usual standards
As a Mercedes Lackey fan, I am very disappointed. It is as if the publisher is trying to promote the other authors by using her as the headliner. Most of the book seems to be fraught with detailed battle sequences and the first about 30 to 40 percent is the first battle. I bought all 3 books based on the prequel short story which seems to have very little in common with the books in general. The only commonality is the name of the witch who has developed agoraphobia in some unknown incident. If I had it to do over, I would not have bought the books. I will probably read them all on general principles because I spent the money and I like a long story. I have never before given Ms Lackey a poor review. However, if you are into meta humans, Nazis, and the whole comic book like genre, this will be good for you.

Not your typical Lackey, but I'll buy the series.
I had a little trouble getting into the story, but I love Mercedes Lackey so I stuck with it. By the end of the book I want to buy the next one as soon as possible to see where this story line is going next. The book has alien attacks and meta humans with special powers. I prefer Mercedes Lackey writing on her own or with Larry Dixon. I did find some of her voice in the book, so it was good. Overall, I really liked the book.

not as good as I expected
If you can get past the first third of the book it gets better. The first few chapters are devoted to introducing all the characters(and there are A LOT). It gives the book a disjointed feeling as it hops all over trying to explain the existence of them all and the demise of some. I assume it is due to making the book resemble the online game so those that play the game don't rip the book apart for not having 'their' metahuman in it or devoting enough time to that particular one. There is far too much background to introduce smoothly. However, once the book begins to focus on a relatively few characters, it does hold up well and made me glad I didn't consign it to the recycle bin as was my first inclination. Will I buy the next in the series? Maybe, maybe not.

Graf book lovedit
This is very different from Mercedes Lackey's other books, but I really liked it. Lots of characters, good character development. A lot goes on, and a lot of background on each character. The book therefore takes a bit of time to get it up to speed. I can't wait to read the next one!
