Can you use a a basketball or only the foam ball?

Not a standard size ball. We bought a smaller ball and our son uses it and the foam ball. It's a sturdy hoop. Our son is now 18, we got last Christmas for his room.

what do the 3 switches do? I can get the return motor on but no sound and no scoreboard? Is there separate batteries for the score?

No it's all wired to the one set of battery's. Make sure you've got a good connection when you plug the bottom assembly into the top. I think 2 switches are for motor speed and the other one is for scoreboard
