McGann does it again
McGann does not not only present the facts of the race, but describes the story of the Giro almost as if he were writing a novel. Extra attention is paid to certain riders, such as Marco Pantani, who did not win all that much but made a huge impact among fans around the world through occasional greatness and complicated personalities. An honest commentary is given on the sad state of doping in this sport. If you enjoyed "The Story of the Tour de France," you would enjoy this book also.

A good second act
Since there is scant information in the English language about the Giro d'Italia, this book is a long-overdue addition to cycling information. I liked that the authors didn't shy away from cycling's dark side (drugs) and were open and honest about suspicious results. It sort of explains why it is a problem that won't easily go away. Highly reccommended for those interested in cycling.

Awesome summary of a very cool race
I'm a latecomer to the world of road racing, it's books like this that leave me wanting more. The authors' style is easy and flowing but informative too. Well done!!

Good read during the lulls ini the cycling season
Following first volume, the authors make extensive use of Italian primary and secondary sources and provides much illuminating background. In particular, the discussion of the increasing use of drugs in the peleton show how old the problem is and how deeply the cyclists sense of omerta runs.

If you are a keen cyclist you will love it
Great story. Read the first book before this one. The author must be a cyclist to be able to appreciate and describe the racing the way he does. Each years race is exciting and informative weaving Italian history and geography into the events.

An Italian Masterpiece, Part II
Of the several wonderful traits that define Carol and Bill McGann, the two that apply best in the case of "The History of the Giro d'Italia (Volume Two: 1971-2011)" would be their passion for researh and their ability to then transform all that information into a lively, readable format that any cycling fan couldn't help but enjoy. Having worked in the bike business for many years prior to staring their own publishing company, they really know their stuff--about both bicycling and books. In the interst of disclosure, I was one of the many people they enlisted to proofread and fact-check their latest work, but let me tell you, it was a pleasure. The finished book is full of tales of the Giro--both funny and serious--and is complete right up to the stripping of Alberto Contador of his 2011 Giro victory earlier this year. The McGanns have no fear of tackling the tough issues head-on; their book touches on issues as diverse as the use of EPO, which began to get really serious in the early 1990s, to the tragic tale of Giro and Tour de France winner Marco Pantani.I can say without hesitation that, together, the two volume "The Story of the Giro d'Italia" is very probably the best history ever written of the Tour of Italy--in any language.JLW

Ottimo manuale
