Allows you to use a KMI MIDI controller with vintage synthesizers and samplers
I use this MIDI expander to connect my KMI 12-Step foot controller (also recommended!) to a Roland SP sampler pad, which has the old-fashioned multi-pin MIDI input. It works seamlessly with these two devices, which were probably manufactured at least 20 years apart. Be warned that it only works with KMI controllers (or so it says, I haven't tested it with any other brand MIDI controllers). It's lightweight but sturdy and worked flawlessly right out of the box.

Works great
It works great, but seemed over priced.

Necessary but dumb
It works as described, but shame on KMI for making a propriety box to decode USB to MIDI. Nickel and dime mentality. The MIDI ports on my unit are not aligned with the metal cutout holes and some wider-sheathed cables are difficult to get in and out because they rub against the edge of the metal cutout.

Way over priced.
It's proprietary and doesn't serve a purpose without its keyboard. It wayyy overpriced. It's like 2-3 pieces of galvanished sheet metal, with a microchip and a few led lights and connection ports, for 60$. Ridiculous. They make you buy this to get the QuNexus to work on an analog synth. Think about that.

It is too bad it's proprietary to Keith McMillen products and needed just ...
I bought this to use my Keith McMillen 12 Step with a Roland Fantom XR, it does what it is intended to do and outputs midi from the 12 step to my sound module. It's very light and there isn't much to it at all for the price. It is too bad it's proprietary to Keith McMillen products and needed just to send midi from what is a midi foot controller... it works though.

My Experience with this MIDI Expander, the K-Board Controller and the Keith McMillen Co was no good
I bought this Keith McMillen MIDI Expander, with their $600 K-Board Controller, and other accessories from Keith McMillen through Amazon. I tried, unsuccessfully for weeks to get everything working, including their software Application. Never got anything to work as it was advertised. I Finally gave up and returned the useless K-Board Controller. This MIDI Expander which apparently is only for "some" McMillen products, did not work with the K-Board, supposedly their flagship controller. Happily, I did get a full refund for the K-Board, but sadly this MIDI Expander and the other proprietary accessories are unable to be used, as I am not ever likely to invest in another Keith McMillen product.

Five Stars
I bought QuNexus and wanted this unit to accompany it. Works perfectly.

Great device. No latency. Does exactly what it is supposed to do without any issues.

I am a little disappointed with this item. It comes with two a-b USB cords and not a midi cord, plus the 12 step I ordered along with this has its own a-b USB cord. Yes I read the description and noted no midi cord, but now I not only have to order a midi cord, but try and figure out how to run this into a sound system that does not use midi connections. May as well just used the laptop to power the 12step.
