An essay on LBGQ issues forced into an artificial frame.
it seems that the writer is trying hard to appear "woke" to the younger generation. She brings up homosexuality and transgender issues and everybody claps and celebrates. Only if life were so simple.meanwhile the story and its characters are all white middle class or upper middle class people. No class conflict in this world. What was jarring for me came in the last chapter where the lesbian/bisexual couple in their 60's goes on a lesbian cruise to Alaska, for their honeymoon.; a 1500 ship of lesbians celebrating themselves while destroying the environment and helping to melt the ice in Alaska. Cruise ship industry is one of the most polluting industries with no value for the human community. maybe we leave carbon footprint in producing food but food is a necessity and we must find ways of less damaging food production and consumption. But cruise ships are the scorch of the earth. This industry should be closed down. There is no purpose to it. The ships' crew are mostly from the global South, making 2 dollars an hour with no labor laws protecting them. Most ships are registered at Panama and are not subject to the safety laws of the US or any other country. They have no purpose but carry a huge hotel of 3000-6000 people around with an amusement park and carry them around the oceans, spewing pollution and waste into the air and the water.........and these"woke" lesbians(one of them with children and grandchildren) do not care about the survival of this earth.I am an older person and I believe we have already used up so much of this earth, we need to cut down our carbon foot prints. I want to tell all the old people to stop going on cruises and try to save this earth for the younger generation.I really did not like this book because it is political and all wrong, making a mockery of real problems of real people.

Not my taste.
I know this book has gotten rave reviews, but really it was not something I would recommend. For me it slid far too easily into that column of books bordering on needless chatter and cataloguing of life's true inanity. It became so full of needless details and meaningless banter that I just had to put it downTo be interesting the characters and storyline have got to be rich and nuanced, (not just full of tons of trivial oddities that go nowhere)-real honest to goodness meaning. So for me, it is a pass.
