Casanova
To really appreciate the life and times of Casanova you must read all six volumes/12 books. His writing is entertaining and intelligent. He pulls no punches about how despicable he is or can be. In spite of the fact that he had many women it would appear that he did truly love one in his early years. This is a wonderful window on the world through out Europe. Casanova is a keen observer but I would warn that you should read all the footnotes as some of the things he says are false. This may have been due to old age and a failing memory. Very enjoyable and difficult to put down once started on this adventure.

well translated
Very well translated Casanova writing is very smooth, elecgant and able to descrive in few words the customs of an era different from to day vulgarities. This is not a book about sex.

What an amazing life!
This is the very best autobiography I have ever read. All 12 volumes. It creates the mould for all autobiographies that proceed it. What incredible stories, so elegantly told.

and on and on...
Casanova's life was amazing, with enough adventure and intrigue to fill... well... volumes and volumes of text. Unfortunately, that's exactly what he decided to do, and while much of it is interesting and involving, after a while I just kept saying 'how much longer does this go on?' Certainly worth reading, but pace yourself or your head will go numb.
