Heroes and Heroines In Sword And Sandal Movie
Dvd arrived quickly and in great condition. Thanks Sharehouse Goods. Above average sword and sandal movie featuring Tony Curtis and the lovely Piper Laurie. Universal Studio, full screen, very good transfer, 75+ minutes, no subtitles or extras. I found this entertaining, providing some laughs and it also features two heroines, which is quite unusual, considering the time period. Numerous 50s familiar faces, the versatile Morris Ankrum and Victor Jory, future "Wyatt Earp" Hugh O'Brian, the beautiful Susan Cabot and plenty others, plus the early narration is provided by Jeff Chandler.

A tasy piece of Arabian Nights hokum
In a convoluted plot to discredit Ali Baba (Morris Ankrum) and get his fabled treasure, the Caliph (Victor Jory) forces a girl (Piper Laurie) to enter the house of Ali Baba's son (Tony Curtis) under false pretenses and a plot that looks like she was kidnapped but the Caliph didn't count on Laurie falling in lover with Curtis. This enjoyable piece of Arabian Nights hokum, directed by Kurt Neumann (THE FLY), is colorful and fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. Curtis handles a sword nicely and Laurie is gorgeous in Technicolor and at a brief running time of 75 minutes, it's just enough swashbuckling, jumping parapets, dancing girls and romance without wearing out its welcome. This is the film where the urban legend says Curtis spoke the immortal words, "Yonder lies the castle of my fadda" but in actuality, his diction is perfect and he says father not "fadda". The large cast includes Hugh O'Brian, William Reynolds, Harry Guardino, Susan Cabot, Gerald Mohr, Mara Corday, Katherine Warren and Ann Robinson. The Bounty Classics DVD imported from Australia is a handsome Technicolor transfer in the appropriate 1.33 aspect ratio. Some of the longshots are a bit soft but most of the film is sharp and crisp.

Ali Baba should have passed on this "son"
Tony Curtis has been for most of my life one of my favorite actors. I think I've seen about 90% of his films from his first 10 or fifteen years. I was about eleven when I first saw "The Black Shield of Falworth" and though it's dated for me now, I love it then. I wanted to be Tony Curtis and I loved Janet Leigh from the moment I saw her. Perhaps it was the genre of the film. I did not ever see Son of Ali Baba. So, when I saw it on DVD, I jumped on it. I still haven't seen the whole thing but what I've seen is like a child's pic. It's almost embarrassing and he was just moving around saying his lines. I would put this film with The Prince Who Was a Thief(his first starring role) as two of his worst films. That's not to say that all of his early films were bad as some critics might. Houdini was great. Also, he did two prize-fight films about two or three years apart and they were terrific...different themes. I'm sorry I bought this movie as the money could have gone for something more worthwhile...No reflection on the seller!

Product didn't work
I purchased this DVD and as far as the service provided through Amazon Prime, it was excellent, as usual. However, the DVD wouldn't play in any of my players and I got messages like- "Cannot play this type of DVD"; "unsupported disc"; cannot play DVD due to area limitations". The DVD itself was in excellent shape and the packaging was likewise intact. Amazon's return policy through Kohl's was also excellent, which is why I rate the overall experience with two stars rather than a zero..

Not widescreen or panoramic widescreen
Loved the movie as a kid at a Saturday Matinee or Drive-In Theatre on the big screen and still like it but was disappointed that it wasn't widescreen. It is box-screen or as they call it full-screen with aspect ratio of 1.37:1 - Black bands on left and right side of a Widescreen TV. Widescreen is aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (letter box - black bands on top and bottom of screen on widescreen TV) and widescreen panoramic is 2.39:1 fills a widescreen TV from top to bottom. Maybe some day they will remaster as it was presented in theatres and drive-ins.

DVD INGUARDABILE!
