Works for what I am using it for.
I bought this mainly to get stereo out of an HDMI signal to a cheap TV that has horrible speakers. So far, it has been doing what it is supposed to do. I have it connected between a two port HDMI switch and the TV. It seems to be passing audio all the time. I get audio when I turn the PC speakers that I have hooked to it on, even if the TV is not on. For me, I like that, because it keeps the HDMI switch alive. Before I installed it, I would have to reboot the TV if I wanted to switch sources if the TV was off to begin with. (In other words, turn TV on, switch sources on the HDMI switch, TV has video but no audio, power TV off and back on.) No longer have this problem.I did try the optical out to a HTIB system and got audio, but I can't verify whether I was getting full 5.1 as we just have two speakers hooked up.

Good for stereo, not so much for other purposes
Using this to extract audio from a Chromecast for whole-home audio distribution through L/R. Works perfectly, but the selector switch to collapse 5.1 - 2ch does not appear to do anything, because center-channel audio is completely lost when broadcasting a movie through the system. No effect on HDMI-out audio, just the extracted L/R channels fail to drop to 2ch.

Works great with AppleTV 4K
I bought this to use with the AppleTV 4K and my older AV Receiver which does not have HDMI but does have optical audio in. Works like a charm.

TOSLINK and HDMI pass great. ARC didn't work.
Initially worked great as TOSLINK extractor. Also passed 4K HDR 60HZ signal just fine. Could not get ARC to work. I tried all input/output and switch combinations, but no ARC signal. After 30 days, the box stopped extracting the TOSLINK signal. I restarted it and adjusted the buttons, but nothing. It was producing a lot of heat, so that may have been the problem.

Solved a problem I've been having with Chromecast with Google TV (CCwGT)
Every time my CCwGT wakes up after it's been "off" for a while, it sends an HDMI/audio signal to my Yamaha receiver that just freaks it out. The HDMI source comes and goes several times (screen flashes, sometimes with noise, sometimes just to blank and back). Sometimes the cycle ends with it having no audio at all (receiver indicates zero audio source). Sometimes no picture either at which point I have to power cycle everything to fix it.What I originally wanted was to put this box between CCwGT and my Receiver, with the switch set to 5.1 optical out, and the optical cable into the receiver for audio.. Hope was that this box would always send a stable signal to the receiver while CCwGT is cycling off and back on, or at least interrupt whatever garbage CCwGT is sending.Good news is, simply having this device in the HDMI chain solved the cycling problem, so now it wakes up cleanly, and I get my DD+ audio source through HDMI. To be clear, it's CCwGT -> HDMI input this box -> HDMI output -> Receiver -> TVI took off a star though, because the optical output doesn't work for some sources, specifically Disney+. It just doesn't seem to be able to decode it at all. Luckily it still works through HDMI. Just odd that it can't do what it was designed to do.

Works with PS5
If you have an optical headset as you may know the PS5 doesn't have one reducing the quality of sound in your headset. Not only does it make your PS4,XB1 headset usable on the PS5 it also supports HDMI 2.0 meaning you can play games at 120hz/fps given that your monitor and HDMI cables support it. Easy to set up and use.

Seems to work
Here is my analysis of using this device with Plex handing off to a Yamaha RX-V995 AV receiver that only accepts toslink input and can only process DD & DTS 5.1 audio. The Apple TV HD is the most interesting result. Not sure how or why it doesn't attempt to natively play DD+ to the receiver. It seems to have a DTS and DD+ decoders built into it but is not passing through.Roku Express 3900X (custom audio selection, enable DD and DTS):DTS > plays native, if MA you need to force playbackDD > plays nativeAtmos > Transcoded to AC3 (via Plex)DD+ > Transcoded to AC3 (via Plex)Roku Ultra 4640X (custom audio selection, enable DD and DTS):DTS > plays native, if MA you need to force playbackDD > plays nativeAtmos > Transcoded to AC3 (via Roku)DD+ > Transcoded to AC3 (via Roku)Apple TV HD:DTS > Transcoded to AC3 (via Apple TV)DD > plays nativeAtmos > Transcoded to AC3 (via Apple TV)DD+ > Transcoded to AC3 (via Apple TV)Dolby TrueHD > Transcoded to FLAC (via Plex)

TOSLINK audio drops out
The box works, for awhile. About every 5 minutes, the TOSLINK optical link seems to drop for a second, causing the linked decoder to mute while it tries to determine what's coming in. This happens regardless if it's 2 channel, 5.1, or anything in between. It's being used as an ARC unit being driven by an LG TV.Also, the volume control from the TV does not work as a true ARC system should.
