Bought it as a gift but couldn't give it away.
I just love Jackie Morris books. I bought this as a gift for my sister, but I kept it and bought her another because it was just to lovely and compelling. Would love to buy them all.

Not just a book for kids!
I'm an adult - but let me say that I absolutely loved this book! I feel anything younger then a teenager might find it to have "too many words and not enough pictures". The story kept moving forward at a consistent pace and didn't leave me bored with too many tiny page-filling details that I didn't care to read. This is a retelling of an old story, and those of us who have read it know how it goes, but that doesn't take away from this retelling at all.Visually, its a stunning piece of artwork. I absolutely love the way Jackie Morris paints and illustrates. The "Reading by Bearlight" painting is one of my favorites. I even tracked the author down through her website to look for prints after not finding any. The author responded personally via e-mail promptly and was very nice, chatty, and very down to earth and was more then happy to go out of her way to create a print for me! (It was not currently any editions that were out) She even recommended other books by other authors that I also ended up enjoying. I love a wholesome book by a not-too-cool-for-school author who has no problem communicating with admirers of her work.

Jackie Morris has become hands down one of my favorite illustrators! These illustrations in this book are gorgeous
Jackie Morris has become hands down one of my favorite illustrators! These illustrations in this book are gorgeous! The tone of the story is beautifully told. However, I will be honest and go against all of the other reviews. First of all this book is quite small. I expected it to be the size of a story book but it is barely bigger than a paperback except for it is rather square in shape. That was disappointing because I loved the illustration so much. I thought it would be full of illustrations and large enough to really enjoy. Also, there were not enough illustrations. They are sprinkled gingerly throughout the book and are just little bits here and there. It is more like a chapter book with a few pictures in it. LITTTLE SPOILER:I will admit that I was disappointed in the end of the book. I know most readers will appreciate the independent spirit of the book but I thought it was a bit anticlimatic.

Extraordinary!
This is the most fantastic version of the story ever. Full of surprise and delight, it far exceeded my expectations! I ordered it because I has seen some of Jackie Morris's artwork online, followed it to her website and became totally enchanted. I plan to buy all of her books! What she did in this retelling of the story is even better than her artwork, which is extraordinary.

A true favorite.
Bought for my 12-year old and she loves this book. She has read it twice and lends to friends to read but always makes sure she gets it back. A true favorite.

Modern Fairy Tale
It took me a while with the changes to recall I'd read this story as a child. I do like the modern twists and it is beautifully written. I do think the ending has to be taken metaphorically, as to what 'the girl's' choice represents, but I do think it's very beautifully done. My only complaint is that it is too short and whilst there are warnings of bad characters as long the way, she does not encounter any. I am however a big fan of the ending, that the girl has a choice and can choose her own ending, because reading the beginning, it is kind of weird that the girl is so readily accepting of 'love' and leaving her family she has gone through so much with. I also think that changing her into a refugee was an absolute stroke of genius, which makes you think twice about the women in fairy tales

Beautiful and magical!
If you think you are too 'grown-up' for this book - think again! It really grabs you and takes into a world of magical happenings and the adventures of the lovely bear (shown on the cover). It is a tale about the growng up of our heroine and all the experiences she goes through. You will find that you really want to know what happens next. The ending is not what you expect, either.

Not impressed.
This book is not really for young children. Promised more than it delivered and the ending is debatable. Usually such books have a reasonably simple moral narrative this is ambiguous. That in itself doesnβt make it a bad book. I was not impressed.

A book to treasure.
This retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon is true to the storytelling tradition, adding insight, layers and richness beyond the original. It is a book of magic and the changing nature of love. I enjoyed it and have subsequently recommended and bought it for several friends.

East of the Sun West of the Moon
I recently purchased this book by Jackie Morris, I'm an older adult and the book was for myself, fully aware it is basically a childrens book. To my great delight I enjoyed the tale immenesely, it is well written, beautifully illustrated and an intriqueing story. There is a sound moral basis to the tale, without being hammered home to put young people off. This is really a 'people' book, any age can enjoy what is between the covers. The characters come alive, even the wind is a personality, and the end has a lovely twist. I would highly recommend it to anyone for a really good read.
