Ching Chong Chinaman

An astonishing play by a genius of a playwright. Big fan of Ms. Yee. She may disagree (and is welcome to) but this play left me with the distinct impression it wanted me to think it was taking its cues from Christopher Durang, but was in truth taking its cues from Sam Shepherd. Either way, there are worse playwrights to draw inspiration from. If you like either of those guys, you will probably like Lauren Yee.

This playwright is hysterical! Readers are given the perspective of growing up as an Asian in the US in a non-politically correct fashion - if you can't tell by the title already. It's a must read for everyone looking to expand their multicultural library.

I picked four stars because I'm the first to review it, and I didn't want anyone to think I was associated with the author, which I am not.It's funny, it's engaging, and it's thoughtful.It's easy to get burned out on plays that take a shallow look at multiculturalism. ("My Mom is Mexican and my Dad is Jewish...Oy Vey Loco!") Condescending plays that can only define heritage as "wacky," and barely go past trodding through cliche stereotypes. "Ching Chong Chinaman" is not one of these plays. It explores the concept of identity in a poignant, fresh manner that stays with you.Fully recommended.

Great value, speedy delivery, well packaged. Arrived earlier than promised. I love it, but my Asian wife wasn't overly impressed.
