I've read many parenting books and found them mostly frustrating because the implementation part was either missing or not effective. Dr. Becker gives you the tools to not only implement but teaches you how to determine effectiveness--collect data on any specific undesirable behavior, implement a behavior modification strategy, and then collect data on effectiveness.This book was easy to read. In a step by step fashion, Parents are Teachers provides a clear understanding of the terminology, methods, and implementation of behavior modification in both parents and children. I say both because the parent also changes when using the tools. Using Dr. Becker's excellent ideas, my husband and I implemented a token system for positive changes with our four children.We found that we noticed more good behavior because we had to award a token and by virtue of reinforcing the desirable behavior, more positive behavior followed. We found it helpful to have two separate types of tokens: individual and family. For example, certain behaviors earned individual tickets used to purchase items of interest to each child and the family tickets (we called peace tickets) were used to purchase fun toys/activities for all the siblings.The best thing about the implementation is that we are replacing the entrenched and damaging behavior of noticing bad behavior with noticing desirable behavior. When Dr. Becker explained why undesirable behavior increases when it is reinforced with any kind of attention, a light bulb went off in my head not because I hadn't heard this theory before but because he had data backing up the theory. Even though sometimes it is difficult, I am now more able to ignore frustrating undesirable behavior, thereby slowly extinguishing it. I ignore the child performing undesirable behavior and reinforce children performing good behavior.If you are feeling frustrated because the myriad parenting "advice" is not sticking, read this book and implement the exercises. Choose one behavior to change, note the changes and feel the success it brings. It will give you positive energy to keep it up..

I am so thrilled to find this book again that I almost can't type this review! I originally bought this book in the 70s when we had two small boys who were in their dawdling, uncooperative stage. Believe me, you can try their sugestions and see instant results. I was blown away! I was so thrilled with the book that I loaned it to our church lib,rary where it disappeared. I HAVE LOOKED FOR THIS BOOK FOR YEARS, even checking out of print books; and have periodically checked here on Amazon. We now have a 3 1/2 year old granddaughter, and this book can't get here fast enough for her parents. Just to be sure, I just ordered TWO - I never want to be without this book to share with others. It is as relevant today as it was 30+ years ago. Thank you, thank you, thank you Amazon for offering this little book, worth its weight in gold in my opinion!

Speedy delivery Great parents book

My 6 year old son started acting very strange this past fall. So strange, that I took him to speak with a therapist whom recommended this book. It's old; but I'm old fashioned so it worked for me. Every tip I learned has helped me better handle all my kids behavior (not just the 6 year old).I would highly recommend.

I highly recommend this book to parents of behaviorally challenged children and to the people in parenting classes I have taught. Its approach empowered us to reach and teach our oldest son whose disabiities include autism. We received it years ago when he was in a psychiatric hospital program modeled on the book's principles. In simple, clear language, using a programmed format any parent could understand, the book teaches what really reinforces behavior, how to avoid power struggles, and how to develop habits that promote cooperation and good behavior. What worked for our son worked even better for the five children who followed him. It probably made having them possible. This is the most helpful parenting book I have ever used.

I originally purchased this book back in 1995. It was a life saver. It taught me so much. My goal was to raise two happy, confident, well adjusted young women. I remember I use to tell people that this is the book all new mothers should be handed after having a baby. Now that my two daughters are in their early 20's, I have just purchased 2 more books. It really is a powerful and amazing book, and I hate reading.

I highly recommend this easy-to-read, interactive parenting workbook to parents pulling their hair out, wondering how to achieve cooperation and not struggles between them and their kiddos. I have been using this book in a course I teach for families since it first came out in the '70's. The practical information and easy-to-implement suggestions contained in it are timeless. Although the strategies are entirely uselful for parents of any child, this book is particularly helpful for parents with children whose behavior is difficult to manage, whose children have language processing disorders, or other learning difficulties.
