Review: Great Supplement or to Offer a More Focused Approach to Grammar - I was already using one of the other Language Lessons books (L. L. for the Elementary Child - 2) in this same series, but knew my son needed more emphasis on grammar usage. The other one seemed more to skim over, not giving enough focus on any given idea. This book has a few pages on each idea. I would recommend this book for any child needing a more focused approach or as an add-on to hone in on specific areas of grammar. The outline in the very beginning of the book makes it so very easy to find the specific skill you're looking for.

Grammar Is Serious Business
I am a long-time fan of Evan-Moor products, owning the Daily Language Review Series, as well as the Reading Comprehension resources. Naturally, when I saw this offering of a grammar practice book, I nabbed it right away. Unfortunately, I was not as impressed with this book as I've been with the others. First, the good bits: Language Fundamentals covers a lot of territory. Each day teaches a discreet unit of language; i.e. verb tenses, comparative adjectives, superlative adjectives, subjects and predicates, clauses, etc. The predictable teaching box at the top clearly gives examples by "teaching on the page". Some practice problems follow underneath the teaching box. "So, why only three-stars?" you might ask. Teaching grammar is serious business. If the students internalize what is taught, their writing improves, and I believe that their understanding of what they read improves. Unfortunately, this book tries to teach too much too fast. It teaches one topic on a day with twelve or so practice sentences, then moves quickly onto a new topic. I think that students need two or three days with many of the more difficult grammar concepts (irregular verbs, and so on), and this book just doesn't offer that. In an attempt to teach even more (and faster) in the limited space of the book, sometimes multiple concepts are taught in one teaching box. For instance, the prefixes "Dis", "Pre", and "Re" are all taught on the same page, followed by a half page of practice (8 questions total) on all three prefixes. Definitely not enough teaching, examples, and practice to help students internalize their learning. This is an ok book to supplement a strong program of grammar study, but unlike the wonderful Reading Comprehension and Daily Language Review series, it doesn't do as good of a job in standing alone as a teaching tool. I would use it as review at the most. That said, since I haven't found any grammar resource as comprehensive as the sort of resources Evan-Moor usually produces, I will keep this one on the shelf. I just hope they come up with something more comprehensive in the future!

Unfortunately when it arrived the front cover and a few of the front pages were ripped. Maybe that’s why it was on sale. Unfortunate but I can still def use it. I’d be more upset if I had paid full price.
