"Charming and magical tale of a Hungarian boy with telekinetic talents who learns the gypsy way of life."....really Amazon?I would suggest to whoever is adding this movie to the Amazon to first watch the movie and check their facts before writing a movie description... This is not a Hungarian boy and he is not trying to learn the ways of a gypsy life... It is about a Romani boy and Romani ways. The most mild comparison I can give for this is : imagine if the Godfather was described as an Irish mafia boss... Not to mention this is arguably the best and most famous movie of Emir Kisturica.

as a south American that understand eastern European culture. this movie is nothing more than a piece of art. from the Music score to the details in how the culture is depicted. this movie is dark , depression and also happy and hopeful like life itself. if you never been outside of your own country , this movie might seems to foreign for you .loved it

I've seen this movie a few times and it's one of my all time favorites. It appears to be out of print on VHS...I think, and it is not available on DVD. I saw it when it came out in the theaters and then went looking for it fairly recently so I could watch it again. The used copy I bought was in so-so condition, but it was worth it. It's about a boy who initially has good intentions when he chooses to work for a con artist to earn enough money to help his family and his girlfriend, but becomes corrupted by the lifestyle. It's a tale that is both touching and comedic, the characters are really strong and the cinematography is great. I also bought the soundtrack, which is one of the best aspects of the film, it's beautiful.

It’s a sweet and timeless story. Having lived in the countryside, this movie does a good job at depicting the beauty and hardship of country life.

While I don't share the same enthusiasm of the five-star reviewers, I have to admit, I was riveted. Not because I thought this was an amazing film, but because it fascinated me. This lifestyle and culture is foreign to me, and I felt like I was experiencing something incredibly unique. And even though I'm not as gung-ho as some of the other reviewers, I'm not about to discredit them, either. This is certainly a, "to each his own'" type of movie. And even though these were't Oscar winning performances, the acting was surprisingly good, all things considered. It's not one that I'd purchase, but as a one-shot deal, to me, it was worth renting. As a recommendation, I'd give it along with a warning: This film is not for everyone. If you're looking for something completely different, something NOT HOLLYWOOD, and you're interested in movies about other cultures, than this movie is worth looking into. There is nudity, drinking, and a scene of forced prostitution, so it definitely isn't 'family friendly', but it IS a unique experience that some people might find worth watching. Just keep in mind: This is NOT a high budget Hollywood movie. But if you're looking for something fascinatingly unique, than this is one to consider. I think three stars is a fair rating.

Gritty film with a fun story line and fine music. It does tend to romanticize the culture and fails to focus on Roma morality, which differa significantly from that of the rest of the world.

Strange and dark movie. Scenes of rape, child abuse and exploitation. Depressing to say the least. There is nothing "magical" about this movie. If you want to "save" your two hours - we wish we could get it back to no avail.

I own very few DVDs, but I searched long and wide for this one, and for a long time wasn't able to find it. This movie is strictly for art-movies lovers, as far from Hollywood-ness, action, romance and suspense as only can be, even though it is a masterful handling of some of these things. A combination of surrealism and brutal reality, extraordinarily funny and extraordinarily heart-wrenching. It is one of the five or six totally unforgettable movies I have seen in my life, a real masterpiece.

Obwohl der Film alle Klischees über Roma und Sinti bedient, ist er sehr sehenswert.Gedreht an Originalschauplätzen mit authentischen, lebensnahen Charakterdarstellern, die in der westlichen Welt zwar kein Mensch kennt, die aber besser spielen als jeder Hollywod-Clo(w)n.Im ersten Moment wirkt der Film einfach skurril.Der junge Roma Perhan wächst zusammen mit seiner Schwester Danila, die an Osteomyelitis leidet, bei seiner Großmutter und seinem unnützen Vater in den Slums von Sarajewo auf. Nochmals, gedreht an original en Schauplätzen!Arm und joblos wie Perhan ist, kann er seiner jungen Braut nichts bieten und nicht einmal den Brautpreis für die Hochzeit mit ihr aufbringen noch würde ihre Mutter ihm Asra zur Frau geben.Da verspricht ein naher Bekannter, Ahmet, der sein Geld mit allerlei Gaunereien verdient, Danila in ein gutes Spital nach Ljubljana zu bringen. Perhan begleitet ihn.Im Glauben, seine Schwester Danila guten Ärzten anzuvertrauen, reist Perhan mit Ahmet weiter nach Italien, wo er in dessen Geschäfte um Prostitution und Kinderhandel verwickelt wird. Zunächst kommt er mit diesem Lebensstil gar nicht zurecht, bis er seine guten Prinzipien ignoriert und über Bord wirft.In Folge macht er eine Menge Geld und vertraut weiter Ahmet, der ihm verspricht, ihm in Italien ein Haus zu bauen.Perhan reist zurück nach Sarajewo, da er seine Oma und Asra wiedersehen will. Enttäuscht weist ihn seine Oma zurück, die in ihm ihren gut erzogenen Enkel nicht wieder erkennt. Sie billigt seinen verdorbenen Lebensstil nicht. Perhan ist verzweifelt und hin und her gerissen.Er heiratet Asra, die mittlerweile hochschwanger ist, glaubt ihr jedoch lange nicht, dass das Kind von ihm selbst ist. Die ganze Situation ist Verfahren.Zurück in Italien, gebiert Asra den Säugling mitten im Winter auf offener Wiese und stirbt. Das Baby bleibt bei Ahmet, der mit seinen leeren Versprechungen gar nicht vorhatte, Perhan ein Haus zu bauen. So langsam dämmert Perhan, dass auch seine Schwester Danila von Ahmet einfach verkauft wurde. Und gar nicht in Ljubljana in Behandlung ist.Nach Asras Tod verspricht er sich und seiner Großmutter, Danila zu suchen und wieder nach Hause zu bringen. Nach vier Jahren gelingt es ihm, sie in Rom aufzustöbern. Dabei trifft er auch auf seinen inzwischen vierjährigen Sohn.Anstatt nun beide Kinder zu nehmen und sie einfach sicher zurück nach Sarajewo nach Hause zu bringen, wird er von Rachegedanken aufgefressen, die ihn noch weiter ins Unglück treiben, bis er schließlich ermordet wird.Der Film verfolgt ein sehr sozialkritidches Thema u.zeigt einmal mehr, wie verfahren die Situation für jemanden von klein auf ist, der in Slums aufwächst. Untermalt ist der Film, der wirklich 10 Oskars verdient hätte, mit der wunderbaren und einzigartigen slawischen Musik von Goran Bregovic.Absolut sehenswertes Zeitdokument mit traurigem Ende. Sehr realistisch.

Maravillosa película, muy divertida

I was a little worried, if this beautiful movie will ever arrive from faraway Korea, but it did, promptly. Perfect quality and full English subtitles ( though Koreanh could have beeb an option, too:-). I love this movie, the message is still fresh after three decades.

Perhan ist der junge Protagonist des Filmes.In traditioneller Weise wächst er mit alten Zigeunertraditionen auf, die ihm hauptsächlich seine gutmütige Mutter vermittelt.Als Perhan von der Sippe getrennt wird, fällt es ihm zunächst äußerst schwer seine Moralvorstellungen, Ansichten und Gewohnheiten abzulegen und sich den kurrupten Richtlinien einer kriminellen Zigeunerbande zu beugen.Eine Art von Überlebensdrang führt den Jungen aber dazu in einer anderen Haut und mit anderen Vorzeichen zu agieren, als er dies bisher gewohnt war. Mit der Zeit geht es ihm rein materiell gesehen besser, doch mit Gaunereien sein Leben auf feste Beine zu stellen, ist eigentlich nicht sein Ding, da sind Werte über Bord geworfen worden, die ihm seine Mutter zu übermitteln versuchte.Der Junge erkennt jedoch seinen Irrweg.Eine nie gesehene Thematik, die hier dermaßen gekonnt und außergewöhnlich gut in Szene gesetzt wird, dass es einem den Atem verschlägt. Sämtliche Klischees, die im Zusammenhang mit Zigeunern bestehen werden bedient, jedoch zugleich durch Überzeichnungen ins recht Licht gerückt.Ein außergewöhnlicher und überaus kurzweilig, unterhaltsamer Film.
