Needs More Maps and Photos
This book is apparently based on the author's script for giving tours of these neighborhoods. So a chapter will start with a reference to a building or a statue that, presumably, people on the tour group are seeing. Unfortunately for the reader, no photo is shown of the building (or statue). Many of them sound quite interesting so it is frustrating not to be able to see them. There are also frequent references to specific neighborhoods and national historic sites but there is no overall map showing the entire area. This makes it difficult to appreciate the nuances of historic district boundaries.Despite these shortcomings, the book has a great deal of interesting detail about the buildings and the people who have lived in them. This is a beautiful and interesting part of NYC so there is a lot of good material to discuss.
