It works, it's OK
For survival in the wild, you definitely need to be able to start a fire, for mental/emotional support, warmth, cooking and signaling. A spark-creator like this one is a good choice since it's waterproof, portable and reliable. The ring on this makes it simple to attach to your backpack or keyring so it's there when you need it.There are just a couple things that make this model just OK. One is that since the stiker and the bar are separate pieces, they could come apart and are useless individually. They do attach together which is good, but only held by friction of the o-rings on the bar. The ring is on the bar that slides into the striker. There is nothing else connecting them, so the possibility is there for them to get separated and lost. The whistle on this is OK. It's about 1775Hz, or an A6 on the scale. It's a good idea to have a whistle handy for signalling - this one blows pretty freely.

Quest for Fire
It's a fire starter and it works.I tried it out in our fire pit with some dried straw and leaves and I was able to start a fire pretty easily. We do a lot of camping, hiking and kayaking so you never know when you'll need to start a fire in an emergency so it's a handy little item to own.I clipped a small carabiner to it so I can attach it to my belt loop when we're out on the trails. I can also clip it to my PFD while kayaking. The whistle is OK, the one on my kayak PFD is louder but it will work in an emergency. It's listed as a 3 in 1 fire starter.... so it has the fire starter, the whistle.....trying to figure out the 3rd one??? Is it the key ring? If that's the case, I have a 2 in 1 USB thumb drive....lolFor the price, it isn't bad and it gives you some peace of mind in case of an emergency.

Versatile
3 in one fire starting tool that has the flint rod and striker incorporated into it, a key ring plus a whistle on the other end. Ring part can be used to attach your keys, paracords or carabiners. Whistle feature works good. The whistle is easy to use and makes enough sound to be heard or located in an emergency. Will do the job and come in handy if you need to start a fire. Good item to take camping or hiking.

Inexpensive Basic Fire Starter
My boys and I have used firestarters before - mostly for fun and practice (there's a cool factor to starting a fire with a firestarter!). This one is a basic firestarter that works just fine. Of course, you have to know how to use a firestarter! This one is solid, the handle hasn't come off yet, and it gets the job done. It's not the most expensive one out there, of course, but it does work. The whistle also works. Anyway, if your life depends on it, maybe get a better one. But this one is good for backup, practice, or for non-emergency situations.

Great tool for a variety of situations
The SE Survivor Series 3-in-1 Firestarter is an essential tool for disaster preparedness, emergency and survival kits, hunting, and other outdoor activities. I got it for camping and emergencies. I have never used a tool of this type before. It easily creates fire for cooking, warmth, safety, and security. Regular matches can be useless in wet and damp environments. We sometimes go canoeing to our camping spot, so I thought this would be the best method for starting a fire at least in those situations. Also, matches run out but this tool doesn't. With this reliable lightweight pocket-sized tool, you will always be ready to start a fire.

An ok flint and steel striker
We have a couple emergency fire starters like this, but this one lacks a few things that I would have liked to see. Mostly, it would be nice to have some magnesium. To call it 3 in 1 is a little bit of a misnomer as there is a whistle and a flint and striker, so basically two in one. It is ok, but to be honest, we have better solutions. This one does spark ok and I think you could get a fire going with this eventually under ideal conditions, but I would still keep a small container of dry tinder to get a fire going. We use magnesium scrapings for wet condition emergency fires. I just wish this was a little more.

Along with the water and the bear spray…
…this fire starter is an essential accompaniment on any long hike. It meets an essential criterion for such hikes: light weight. Furthermore, it meets the other criterion: it works! The fact that it has a whistle is a plus.It is a wonderful fringe-benefit of living in New Mexico: it is often possible to hike on trails from our state parks and be the only person on the trail the entire day. Wonderful remoteness, and isolation. Unless one twists an ankle. Then the importance of a product with “survivor” in the name becomes apparent.I’ve read the other reviews. Did not see mentioned a serious deficiency. However, still a bit puzzled by the “3-in-1” and what that means. Furthermore, being a “belt and suspenders” sort of guy, I carry regular matches with me, which will almost always be dry, and are a much easier method of starting any fire. Overall, for a good back-up: 4-stars.

Nice Size Fire Starter
I've used fire starters like this over the years and those I have owned (and still have) have a much shorter striker length - this one is better. The fact it comes apart fully to me is a feature not a bug. Another reviewer correctly pointed out that either component is useless alone but to me the ability to easily use it without a cord connecting the parts makes it better. The parts fit together snugly with the friction of an o-ring and as long as it is put back together after use (no reason not to!) nothing will be lost. It also includes a nice loud whistle as a bonus.Overall, highly recommended.
