Outstanding! Wish I read this sooner!
At first, I wasn't sure about the "genre pedagogy" approach to teaching, but through this book I realized that a had a huge misinterpretation of the method because of how I was taught in school! Lattimer meticulously talks you through her approaches to various types of writing that is typically taught in the high school classroom (AND I still find her entertaining). The way she scaffolds her lessons on top of one another is amazing! The most important aspect, however, is her modeling process and how we present our writing to students. I will most certainly be using these techniques with my classes!

GET THIS BOOK
This is my third copy of this book. Other teachers borrow it and forget to return it. It's that good.Reading and writing taught together - - simple premise, and this book gives you everything you need to know. This will help the beginning teacher all the way up to the experienced one.

Looking for More Concrete Ideas
I thought this book was well written, but I was hoping for more hands-on activities for students relating to the different genres than the book actually presented. This was not as full of helpful examples as I was hoping.

amazing resource!
I have been teaching at the elementary level for over 10 years. This book deepened my understanding of how to use genre studies to engage students in an inquiry approach that deeply impacts (and improves) their reading and writing even though it was written for use with older students. The opening chapters are easy to read, engaging, and so incredilby informative. The sample lesson plans helped me make concrete connections to how to actually do this approach with kids. It truly deepened how I approach teaching genres to student, and how I am able to make connections for kids between reading and writing in a genre. It's a great and practical resource!!

A thorough guide
This book gives a thorough description of how to lead students through reading and writing workshops in the genres memoirs, feature articles, editorials, short stories and fairy tales. If you have never led a group before, it gives you a handbook on how to approach the genres, and the courage to try it out yourself.
