but I was delighted to come across it again
I haven't read this book yet, this time around....but I was delighted to come across it again, and ordered it at once. I first read it many years ago,. Now and again a book comes along that you never forget....and like an itch that needs scratching, doesn't give you any peace 'til you've read it again...and again. This is such a book.... A feisty young girl comes to teach in a small school, in a small town. What follows are her adventures as she meets, and learns about the many interesting characters who live there, and the effects they all have on each others lives. Read it.....like me you will never forget it !

Grim cover for a beautiful story
I would have given this item 5 stars, except that the cover picture is horrible, not as nice as the actress in blue dress. The advert did say that the cover picture was not as shown, but honestly it's GRIM! The pages are brown with age. This is a gift for someone special, and I know she will adore this book, but, I'm going to look for a copy with more appeal and keep this one for myself....because it's a beautiful true story.

Highly recommended
This is historical fiction, about 75% biographical, 25% fiction, set in the United States in the early part of the 20th century. Christy, nineteen years old and idealistic, is based on the author’s mother; many of the anecdotes in the book are based on her experiences as a young teacher in a remote village with poor sanitation and almost no education.Christy is thrown into a lifestyle that seems very primitive. At first she can’t bear the smell of unwashed children, and has little idea how to handle them. Gradually she learns to love them for themselves, aided by the delightful Miss Alice, an older Quaker woman. Christy gradually makes friends among the local women….The novel is educational without being overtly so; it gives an excellent picture of the scourges of poverty, lack of sanitation and illiteracy. It’s Christian in theme, yet without being preachy. There are parts which are shocking, even in an era when disasters and bereavements were fairly common. It's a long book which is very well-written, and the characters come to life clearly. Highly recommended for older teens as well as adults.

A novel that will change your faith forever
When I bought Christy on the recommandation of a friend, I saw no reason to believe that I would especially enjoy or appreciate this novel over any other. In all truth, enjoy is the wrong word for a book that changed my perspective and God and indeed on life forever. From the beginning of the novel, Christy Huddleston captured my imagination. She goes to a mountain village to be a schoolteacher, and wants to change the world with nothing but youthful enthusiasm. She is a strong Christian, yes, but she has no understanding of what she believes. And she arrives in a dirty, impoverished, illiterate, diesese-ridden little mountain villiage, the personification of an innocent, intelligent girl with a longing for something out of the ordinary mold. The book goes on to introduce Alice Henderson, a woman of God who is unbelievable devout. Not devout in a self-ritieous, untouched, pure way, but devout in the sense of woman who faces murder, starvation, rape, diesese, death, illiteracy and confrontation on a daily basis, and who somehow becomes stronger from the experiance. Somehow, amid death and hate, she sees a warm and loving God who only wants the best for each of his children here on earth. Yet she also believes that a person of faith must work with and for those who are in pain, and show them that God is your reason and your purpose. She constantly critiques the "ivory tower" (a place where there isn't pain, and everything is protected and unexposed to any hurt or harm) many of us live in, eloquantly speaking on behave of doing God's will to the least of his people. As Alice showed Christy what faith means in our day-to-day lives, I, with Christy, realized how much I did not trust God before.Christy is the story of a girl who learns to stand up for herself and for her God. In some ways, it a story about growing up in faith and love. It is a love story, love between man and God, love between friends, love between parents and children, and even love between man and woman. It reconciles tragedy with love, and allows the reader to see the magnificent beauty in the world. Although Christy was written some time ago, it is as relevent now is it was then, because there is more strife than ever in the world. This novel so beautiful in its simplicity and in its truth.Near the beginning of the novel, Christy is questioned intensely about God's purpose and God's existence. She finds that she cannot respond to the quesitons because she has not defined them for herself. With strength, fire and the ultimate love for God and for her neighbor, Christy grows into a confident young woman who now has answers to these questions. Whether you have a strong faith already or are seeking to deepen it, this ultimate story about the power of God, love and passion for the world will help you to find answers to many of the big questions of life, and will help you to define what, how and why God is.
