Bernhard did it again.
I am convinced that this writer can hold his own among the best writers of court room thrillers. This is the fourth book I read of his and I can't wait to read the next one. The main character, Daniel Pike, is a fantastic lawyer but has some crazy ways of solving the crimes and usually at the last minute. He is quite the showman in the court room which usually ticks off the judges and the his opponent but very entertaining. Of course the author makes you wait till the end to find out who the real killer is and I really can't figure it out on my own.

Many interesting twists and turns
Interesting story with lots of twists and turns. Not exactly the ending i was anticipating, but surprising none the less. Anxious to see where the Mayor comes back in.

The right one finally gets the correct reward.
What a mess, the right characters finally get what they deserve. But read all the way to the end to get the real surprise as to who that is.

Entertaining legal thriller
Attorney Daniel Pike is arrested and tried for the brutal murder of St. Petersburg D.A. George Belasco after an anonymous source sends the police a tape of Dan and his paramour, the Mayor, discussing getting rid of Belasco. Dan doesn't have many friends in law enforcement or the justice system, but Belasco was no angel either. There's not much evidence other than that questionable tape recording, but Dan seems headed for death row unless his investigators can turn up evidence of who else could have done it. There is a second story line, minor but related, about human trafficking, involving a local power broker.I haven't read Bernhardt's books in a while, but have enjoyed them in the past. I did enjoy this book, although the court case seemed more like a railroad than a slam dunk for the prosecution. Good characters, good dialog. The only weak spot was how the case was resolved, in the courtroom, with the defendant interrupting testimony, standing up, and announcing that he "knows who did it" a la Columbo or Hercule Poirot. Lost a little credibility there, but otherwise, I found this an entertaining story and will try to go back and read some of the ones I missed over the years.

Good story but with some flaws
The pros to William Bernhardt's novel are many, including an engrossing, well written story with an interesting plot line. But there are a few cons, especially concerning Daniel Pike's defense.**Spoiler Alert** This gives some of the plot away!Cons: All evidence is circumstantial and some probably illegal, which would most likely disqualify a 1st degree murder charge; there was no eyewitness, and the one who saw the alleged murderer leaving the scene of the crime gave her identification based on a biased presentation of possible candidates; there was no murder weapon found, nor was there any proof that Daniel could hit a moving target even if he had shot the DA, let alone nail him perfectly with five center core shots and one head shot; the 'snitch' from the jail got the shots wrong, saying that they were frontal and not from the back and at least two were not where the coroner had identified them--and the fact that he was a semi-professional tale teller in court was not well brought out; there was no eyewitness to the meeting of the 'snitch' and Daniel Pike, so it was one man's word against another's--and only one had something to gain; the fact that the impaler was not proven to belong to Daniel's kitesurfing equipment; and why the did defense team not obtained a letter from Elena's doctor clearing her of demented thinking before she took the witness stand? The cons could have been avoided with just a little bit more creativity--and that would have made for a really great story!

Twists and Turns Galore
Love me some Danial Pike. This character is something else, and I don't believe I've ever read a book with so many brilliant twists and turns. All the characters are fully and impressively developed and wonderfully flawed. The multiple plots keep the reader in a state of perpetual anticipation. Even though rich with complications, the story line does not make demands on the reader. It flows effortlessly. And just when I thought it had come to the end, another surprise. And, then, there are Daniel Pike's recipes that always surprise me and make me smile. My favorite witticism of Bernhardt's, and there were may, was when he cleverly said (I'm paraphrasing) "even when he wasn't wearing a cowboy hat, he looked like he was wearing a cowboy hat." How slick is that? I laughed, and had to re-read the line. This is the fourth book in the Danial Pike series. I can't wait to read the fifth.

Entertaining courtroom drama
I generally stick to authors I know who I can be sure will entertain me. However, I decided to give William Bernhardt a go for the first time and I'm glad I did. His story moves along at a good pace, is entertaining and his characters likeable. I do think however that some of the courtroom scenes were stretching credibility just a bit, but hey, this is fiction.Having enjoyed this tale I've purchased the first Daniel Pike story which says it all really.

Potential unrealised
I think there was potential in this story, but the author was guilty of labouring his point, often stretching credibility and authenticity to unacceptable limits. In the end the final pages came as a welcome relief.
