Hipanda Aquarium Bio Sponge Filter Media Pad Cut-to-fit Foam for Aquarium Fish Tank, 16" x 4.7" x 2.75"

This is a better filter than the plastic junk that is used in Marineland Portrait Desktop tanks or similar. I took out the plastic filter compartment that houses the cartridge filter and sponge filter, because the water seems to flow out through the sides for some reason, which then allows sludge to clog the pump intake. Cleaning the pump is very tedious in my opinion. So I bought this foam filter and at the smallest dimensions for a not-so-tight fit, and I then cut it to 8.5 inches in length. I stuffed in place of the plastic filter compartment thingy you can pull out. It's now filtering every much better, however, I may have to cut a hole inside to place some chemical filter packs inside as well. It doesn't seem to clog even though the exterior inlet for the backside of the tank's filter section get packed with debris and detritus. The water level on both sides stays fairly equal, too. This is also going to be good for housing my beneficial bacteria, which might even be more efficient for them as the water passes through them faster compared to the semi-anoxic zones in my substrate. These foam filters might even be a better replacement for cartridge filters in other tanks. It mechanically filters things better without clogging completely like cartridge filters. Then, if you cut a space on the inside, you can stuff it with bio-media to make bio-filtration even more efficient. Or maybe, put a mix of bio-media and carbon or other resins sealed in a filter bag, etc.

excellent product doesn't break down being outside in sun.

I didn't put it in the tank as yet but the size and pores of the sponge are good for filter even if I have to cut it.
